Polygon Improvement Proposal (PIP) 29 proposes the creation of a Protocol Council as a fundamental first step in moving the Polygon ecosystem towards scalable and decentralized governance.
The Polygon Protocol Council is presented as an essential part of the path to move towards the construction of Polygon 2.0 and lay the foundations for new decentralized governance on the blockchain.
According to Polygon developers, the Protocol Council will consist of 13 respected members from projects that are part of the Polygon ecosystem, who will act through a Gnosis Safe contract to implement changes to the protocol.
This Protocol Council will be focused on executing upcoming community-led upgrades to the Polygon protocol.
On X (formerly Twitter), Polygon Labs highlighted that the Polygon Protocol Council “will serve as a trusted steward and guardian of the protocol.”
Jordi Baylina, Viktor Bunin, Liz Steininger, Jerome de Tychey, Anthony Sassano, Zaki Manian, Mehdi Zerouali, Mudit Gupta, Mariano Conti, Justin Drake, Gauntlet, L2Beat, and ZachXBT are the high-quality members that will make up the Polygon Protocol Council if the PIP-29 improvement proposal is approved.
Polygon puts the focus on feedback and community participation
As governance and decision-making becomes more decentralized on the blockchain, community feedback and engagement becomes more important, Polygon Labs developers noted.
Polygon highlighted that the ability to update smart contracts is a necessity in the Polygon 2.0 architecture, since, by design, second layer or L2 networks require some presence on main or layer one (L1) networks, which in the case of Polygon is the Ethereum blockchain.
“In order to maintain security and the ability to seamlessly transition to an updated version, there needs to be someone or something externally empowered to take action when necessary,” the developers explained. Hence the need to establish a Protocol Council responsible for changes made to the system’s smart contracts implemented on Ethereum for existing and future Polygon protocols.
Polygon claims that all of the proposed members of the network's Protocol Council are aligned with the core values of Web3, Ethereum, and Layer2 (L2) networks.
