Inflation drops to 9% in September, its lowest level since last May

Electricity and gasoline account for a large part of this fall in inflation, while underlying inflation fell two-tenths to 6,2 percent.

Inflation decline

Inflation fell for the first time in several months in September to 9%, the lowest level since last May.

In recent weeks, the slightly cheaper price of electricity and the drop in gasoline prices have allowed the CPI to fall below 10% for the first time in more than three months.

Although the 9% general indicator advanced by the INE is provisional data, if confirmed it would specifically mean a decrease of one and a half points in the annual rate if we take into account that in August the variation was 10,5%.

According to some experts at the INE, this trend is mainly due to “the drop in electricity prices, which rose in September 2021”. They have also highlighted the importance, to a lesser extent, of “the drop in fuel prices compared to last year’s increase”, as well as “the drop in transport”.
