Ethereum developers are prioritizing ETH staking withdrawal capabilities for the upcoming network upgrade, Shanghai.
The new withdrawal devnet launched by Ethereum developers allows testing ETH withdrawals within a controlled test environment, in order to verify that the new functionality works completely, before its implementation on the main network.
Dubbed “Devnet 2,” the new developer network allows Ethereum client teams to implement withdrawals ahead of a shadow fork launch, which will help teams better prepare for the arrival of the long-awaited Shanghai upgrade.
The ability to withdraw validator ether, which remains “staked” or deposited in the Beacon Chain, is one of the most anticipated functionalities in the Ethereum blockchain ecosystem.
Early next month, the network's development team plans to launch a public testnet as part of preparations for the Shanghai upgrade, which is planned to arrive sometime in March, said Christine Kim, a research associate at Galaxy Digital.
Ethereum prioritizes withdrawals of validator ethers
During the First meeting held by Ethereum developers this 2023, the team agreed to give top priority to validator ether withdrawals.
According to Kim, during the meeting, developers rejected implementing any additional Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) in Shanghai, in order to ensure that there is no delay in the withdrawal of staked ETH.
Initially, EIP-4844, which will introduce the Proto-danksharding scaling mechanism to the blockchain network, one essential to achieving its scalability goals, was planned to launch alongside the Shanghai upgrade.
However, at the end of December, the Ethereum development team gave up on implementing this improvement proposal in order to focus primarily on withdrawals of staked ether.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, is confident that the EIP-4844 could be launched on the blockchain in 2023, although there is no planned date for this yet.
Almost 1 million ETH in staking rewards
Kim also commented that, currently, Ethereum validators have generated nearly 973.270 ETH in rewards since the launch of the Beacon Chain, in December of 2020.
At the time of writing, this amount of ETH is worth approximately $1.490 billion, based on the current market price of Ethereum (ETH) of $1.530 per unit. This amount of ether earned as staking rewards on the network is expected to become liquid after the implementation of Shanghai, Kim said, which could lead to volatility in the price of the cryptocurrency.
There are currently over 16,96 million ETH staked on Beacon Chain, from 499.453 active node validators on the network.
