Bitwise donates $150.000 to support Bitcoin developers

Bitwise has announced a donation of $150.000 to three organizations supporting the development of Bitcoin. This contribution reinforces its commitment to supporting the developers of the most capitalized network in the crypto market.

Recently, Bitwise Asset Management announced a significant donation to three non-profit organizations dedicated to the development of Bitcoin's open source code. Through a post on the X platform, the investment firm confirmed that $150.000 has already been sent to Brink, OpenSats and the Human Rights Foundation Bitcoin Development Fund.

This donation is part of a broader commitment made by Bitwise in January 2024, when the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) gave the green light to Bitcoin spot ETFs. At the time, Bitwise announced that it would donate 10% of the gross profits generated by its Bitcoin ETF, the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB), over the next 10 years. This continued financial support seeks to strengthen the development of the Bitcoin network, ensuring its security, scalability, and usability for millions of users around the world.

On the other hand, the recent donation not only supports the technical work of blockchain developers, but also underlines the importance of maintaining a active and sustainable community behind the network and protocol. Although Bitcoin developers often work in the background, their work is essential to ensuring the integrity and continued progress of the network.

$150.000 sent to three key organizations in the Bitcoin ecosystem

The $150.000 donation made by Bitwise will be distributed among three organizations that have demonstrated a strong commitment to the development of Bitcoin.

Brink, one of the beneficiary organizations, focuses on providing scholarships and resources to new developers looking to contribute to the protocol. OpenSats, for its part, works on creating tools and services that help the network reach its full potential and facilitate access to Bitcoin for users around the world. Finally, the Bitcoin Development Fund The Human Rights Foundation supports projects that promote the adoption of Bitcoin in contexts where financial freedom is limited and in challenging political environments.

Bitwise's long-term commitment to Bitcoin

Bitwise's support for Bitcoin development is not an isolated gesture. In January 2024, the firm had announced that it would donate 10% of the gross profits from its Bitcoin ETF (BITB). This promise was recently materialized with the first annual payment, amounting to $150.000.

Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley has previously stressed the importance of ensuring a steady stream of funding for Bitcoin developers. In his words, these "Anonymous heroes" work every day to improve the network, but often lack sufficient resources to sustain their projects in the long term.

INVITE AND WIN

With this initiative, Bitwise seeks not only to support the technical development of Bitcoin, but also to foster a culture of sustainability within the crypto ecosystem. The firm has made it clear that this donation is just the beginning of a commitment that will last for more than a decade.

Why Is This Important?

Bitcoin development is no easy task. Although the network is decentralized and resilient, we require an active community of developers to constantly update the protocol to address challenges such as scalability, privacy, and security.

Developers working on Bitcoin Core, the network’s main client, are responsible for implementing improvements and solving technical problems. However, many of them work on a voluntary basis or with limited resources. Hence the importance of the financial support that companies like Bitwise can provide. These resources are essential to ensure that these professionals can dedicate their time and effort to improving the blockchain network. In addition, this investment indirectly contributes to benefiting all Bitcoin users, from individuals to companies that rely on blockchain technology.

Like Bitwise, other investment fund managers, such as vaneck, have also committed to donating part of the profits from their ETFs, in this case the VanEck Bitcoin Trust, to Bitcoin Core developers for at least 10 years.

In short, these donations are key because they reinforce the development, security and evolution of the network. As mentioned, it is not only about supporting the technical work of blockchain developers, but also about underlining the importance of ensuring a sustainable and resilient ecosystem for all of us who trust in Bitcoin as a free and decentralized financial tool.
