LG files trademark application to integrate NFTs into its TVs

LG Corporation will be the next major consumer brand to integrate NFTs into SmartTVs.

South Korea-based electronics and smartphone company LG Corporation plans to link its brand with NFTs, bringing this technological innovation to thousands of homes around the world.

Trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis reported on Twitter that the company has filed a trademark application to create SmartTV software that would allow users to trade NFTs from their smart TVs.

The trademark application was filed earlier this month with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

In January of this year, the South Korean company had reported that it would integrate NFTs into its products, to facilitate its users' access to these digital assets without having to leave their homes.

One of the first major consumer brands to publicize this idea was Samsung, also based in South Korea.

Earlier this year, Samsung announced that its Micro LED, Neo QLED and Lifestyle SmartTVs would feature a marketplace for buying and selling NFTs, allowing owners to display their non-fungible tokens as works of art in their homes.

LG is interested in NFTs, cryptocurrencies and the Metaverse

In addition to including the creation of a marketplace software for NFT tokens, LG's trademark application filed with the USPTO also includes the creation of an electronic wallet, a platform for managing cryptocurrency transactions, and software for exchanging electronic money in the Metaverse, Kondoudis' post notes.

According to this application, LG's interest in the crypto and non-fungible token world is increasing.

In December 2021, LG's premium brand LG Signature took advantage of the immersive art exhibition The Gateway, which was held during the event Art Basel in the city of Miami, to present its new SmartTV Oled R model.

The experience was described by several attendees as revolutionary.

For her part, Peggy Ang, senior vice president of marketing for LG Electronics in the USA, said that the technological advances represented by NFTs and the Metaverse are a natural fit for the consumer brand.

In May this year, the South Korean company collaborated with designer and media artist Refik Anadol to launch a collection of limited-edition NFT tokens.

Global brands want to enter the NFT world

This year, dozens of brands around the world have made the decision to venture into the world of NFTs and the Metaverse.

Kondoudis reported last week that the USPTO had received more than 3.300 requests of trademarks related to NFTs this 2022.

Meanwhile, Time magazine reported that this year alone, the word Metaverse had been cited more than 1.100 times in regulatory filings made with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
