Fear and Greed index what is it

The Fear and Greed Index is an indicator of the emotional state of the market.

The general idea behind this indicator is show investors the general market sentiment, so that moments of fear, apathy or greed can be detected.

Fear and Greed serves as an indicator of emotional state and as a reminder that Decisions should never be made in emotionally agitated moments.; Decisions should never be made when we are euphoric, nor when we are angry.

This is the foundation on which the Fear and Greed Index. By analyzing factors such as market volatility, accentuated buying and selling spaces (momentum), activity on social networks, the media or surveys, it is possible to detect the emotional state of traders.

Is the Fear and Greed Index reliable?

The Fear and Greed Index is a good way to measure market sentiment and is generally accepted as a guide to know when a cycle begins or ends.

However, it must be taken into account that cycles change, as the market evolves, which causes the Fear and Greed not be a constant indicator.

This is best explained with an example.

On May 17, 2022, after the fall of the Terra ecosystem, Bitcoin was above $30.000 and the Fear and Greed Index marked 8 (extreme fear).

However, as of February 20, 2023, with Bitcoin just over $24.000, the indicator is in the greed zone, above the 50 mark.

Therefore, this indicator allows us to get an idea of where we are within a cycle, but always within the context of the market; In May we were coming from high prices and the fall of Terra caused panic. Instead, over the last few weeks Bitcoin has been rising, which puts the indicator in green.

It is also not an indicator that we can trust 100%, since prices can keep going down when excessive fear is reached or continue rising in times of extreme greed.

This is because It is very difficult to accurately measure the momentum of the market. or at what moment it can change. The volatility of the crypto market is very difficult to predict.

Despite everything, it is an indicator that we must take into account when making our own investigations (DYOR). Following the advice of the famous investor Warren Buffet, we can use Fear and Greed to “buy when the market is afraid and sell when investors are greedy".
