Ethereum Name Services (ENS) announced the integration of Domain Name Services (DNS) to the Ethereum Ropsten testnet. With this, ETH users will now be able to use their domain names with “.com”.
According to release recently published by the organization, Ethereum Name Services (ENS) is implementing smart contracts (smart contracts) to integrate DNS name services into ENS name services.
The integration of the DNS namespace provides a more practical approach to Ethereum Name Services (ENS) users, who will now be able to use the “dot com” (.com) instead of the native domain of the network ”eth dot” (.eth) to claim their domain names. Expanding the name service on ENS into the DNS namespace, the developers explain, allows ENS to achieve a better chance of long-term success.
Although, for the moment, the integration is being done on the test network (testnet) of Ethereum, ropsten, the developers explain that the developer company of Ethereum Classic (ETC), Ethereum Classic Labs, awarded them a grant to sponsor the development of this new feature. This way, if the implementation of DNS in ENS goes well on the testnet, the developers will be able to implement the new feature on the mainnet in the coming weeks.

ENS for cryptocurrency payments
One of the main functions that ENS services seek is to provide decentralized names for wallets, websites and much more.
Ethereum Name Services allows users to set up a record for their existing domain name in DNS, within its ENS system. This way, on ENS users can uniquely associate their domain names to a crypto wallet address, and make or receive payments in cryptocurrencies, without needing a long address, like those found natively in wallets and WalletsWith ENS, users can receive and send payments in cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum (ETH), Ethereum Classic (ETC), Bitcoin (BTC), Litecoin (LTC), Dash (DASH) y Dogecoin (DOGE), just by using their domain names, similar to how payments are made via email addresses on Paypal.
“No more copying and pasting long addresses. Use your ENS name to store all your addresses and receive payments in any cryptocurrency.”
The developers also explain that, for the moment, the new ENS update will only be functional for integrating second-level DNS domains, of the type 2LD, such as “example.com”, and not for SNS domains of the type 3LD (third level), such as “example.co.esDespite this momentary setback, Ethereum Name Services explains that most DNS domain names will be usable on ENS, and that in the near future they will enable a new feature to implement 3LD domains.
Ethereum Classic Labs Grants
To boost the development of the new ENS feature, Ethereum Name Services developers received a grant from ETC Labs, the company responsible for the development of the Ethereum Classic project and forked cryptocurrency.
Terry Culver, CEO of ETC Labs, highlighted that the implementation of the new ENS feature will allow this service to provide a more robust Internet infrastructure, of great public importance and fundamental to the development of the digital ecosystem. Culver assured that the integration of the DNS namespace to ENS will increase utility and boost adoption, as it exponentially expands the horizon of cryptocurrency-related functionalities. For some users, it will be much easier to use their domain name to receive cryptocurrency payments than to use the typical addresses of the ecosystem.
