Innovations of the participants

The Bank of Spain recently published its Strategic Plan 2024, which prioritizes the study of new technologies and the development of a CBDC to be at the forefront of the digital transaction of our era. For its part, Banco Santander is already implementing a system for international transactions based on blockchain, which to date has successfully carried out transactions worth more than 400 million euros through the services of One Pay FX

Likewise, Telefónica, another of the great speakers at this conference on blockchain and economy, is a pioneer in the implementation of an identity system based on blockchain, TrustID, which allows for the decentralization of identity management in the different blockchain networks. In addition, this company also promotes a SCHEDULE training and support that seeks to help Spanish companies and organizations, and other blockchain-based projects, to promote and develop the technology. The call made by Telefónica on September 15 will be open until October 27, and invites all those companies and startups that have the potential to develop blockchain technology within the business sector to participate.

The rest of the participants, such as Repsol, Cepsa and Bankia, are also venturing into the blockchain universe, developing a digital network that includes around 150.000 Digital Identities (ID) that allow the verification and validation of the identities of the entities' own employees and companies, as well as those who work with them. The blockchain proposal of Repsol, Cepsa and Bankia is developed jointly with Grant Thornton's BlockchainLab, one of the largest and most important professional services companies worldwide, serving more than 144 countries.

Spain, promoting blockchain technology

In a report made by AMETIC, one of the largest associations in the technology and telecommunications sector, reveals that more than 120 million euros have been invested in blockchain development projects in Spain during 2020. And due to the enormous potential that this technology holds, the association affirms that it will continue to grow and expand throughout the country and the world, despite the entry barriers that blockchain faces due to the lack of awareness of its potential and its multiple use cases.

Still, Spain is pioneer, in the world, in the development and approval of a European standard for the application of blockchain-based Digital Identity solutions, Alastria ID, which will be submitted to CEN/CENELEC for final approval.
