Argentina opens the 1st consulate in the Metaverse

The Open Consulate in the Metaverse is the first virtual space created by the diplomatic representation of the Latin American nation. 

During the Mobile World Congress, an international event held in Barcelona to promote mobile technology, the “Open Consulate in the Metaverse” was presented, an immersive space from which the diplomatic representation of Argentina intends facilitate the active participation of their communities to to strengthen new relationships with public and private organizations in Barcelona. 

The Consulate General of the Republic of Argentina in Barcelona is the first representation of the country's public administration to present an official headquarters in the virtual world. 

The metaverse initiative of the Consulate General of Argentina is part of the country's technological hub in the Spanish city. 

According to the Argentine Foreign Ministry, this technological hub seeks to boost the growth and expansion of the Latin nation towards the European market. The Argentine hub in Barcelona was presented by the nation's ambassador, Alejandro Alonso Sainz, during the Barcelona Tech event held in July of last year. 

The Argentine Consulate expands into the Metaverse

Argentina, one of the Latin American countries where the cryptocurrency market has seen undeniable growth, is moving towards the potential opportunities of the virtual world. 

The Consulate General of the nation highlighted that the development and expansion of the Metaverse is presenting new networking and business opportunities associated with the knowledge economy. The diplomatic representation wishes to take advantage of these opportunities to give greater visibility to its work and efforts, especially to the commercial, cultural, tourist and investment promotion actions that it is currently carrying out. 

Likewise, the Argentine Consulate General highlighted that the Metaverse could serve another of its objectives, generating content with added value for accelerate the growth of the Argentine business ecosystem and promote its internationalization in the city of Barcelona and in the European market. 

On the other hand, the virtual space in the Metaverse will serve to promote new meetings with the Argentine community, said the Consulate, for example, to develop different activities such as art exhibitions, virtual tours, listening to the Consulate podcast, promoting innovative initiatives and projects, among others. 

In the presentation made by the Consulate General about its new metaverse space, it can be seen that the “Open Consulate in the Metaverse” is available as an app in the Google app store for Android and Apple app for iOS. 

Barbados and other nations present in the virtual world

In addition to Argentina, other nations around the world have been exploring the potential of the Metaverse to interconnect with other regions, such as Barbados and South Korea.

In 2021, the Ambassador of Barbados to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Gabriel Abed, announced the opening of the first real-world embassy in the Metaverse. The initiative responded to the need of the Government of Barbados to create a space to expand its interconnection and communication capabilities with its thousands of citizens. Barbados has opened an official embassy on the Decentraland metaverse platform, based on the Ethereum blockchain. 

On the other hand, the South Korean government is betting on the metaverse to offer its citizens access to different public services, tourist and entertainment. 

Other countries such as Singapore are considering the opportunities of the virtual world to carry out judicial processes, while Japan looks to the growing meta-universe as an ideal space to guarantee its development and technological and economic leadership.
