He sold everything for Bitcoin: the story of the man who bet his life on crypto

Didi Taihuttu

In 2017, Didi Taihuttu, a 39-year-old Dutchman, made a radical decision that catapulted him to fame in the crypto world: he sold everything he owned — his house, his company, his car, even his daughters’ toys — to invest in Bitcoin. Together with his wife Romaine and their three daughters, he left a comfortable life in Venlo, the Netherlands, and moved to a campsite, betting on a future where cryptocurrency would be their livelihood. What seemed crazy to many, for Taihuttu was a vision.

His relationship with Bitcoin began in 2010, when he started mining the cryptocurrency. In 2013, he sold his first BTC, later regretting that decision when he saw its value skyrocket. It was in 2017, after a family trip that opened his eyes to minimalism, that he decided to go “all in.” With Bitcoin at $900, he invested everything, convinced that a boom was coming. His house sold for 85 BTC (about 300,000 euros at the time), a sum that today, with Bitcoin surpassing $100,000 in 2024, is worth millions.

Since then, the “Bitcoin Family” has traveled to more than 40 countries, living off their crypto assets and promoting a decentralized lifestyle. Taihuttu keeps his fortune in cold wallets hidden on four continents, a strategy to protect it and access it while traveling. Although his bet has paid off — today he does not need to work — he insists that it is not just about money, but about freedom and showing the world the power of Bitcoin.
