The bug found in Ethereum causes data loss when logging out.
The Merge, the merger of the Ethereum blockchain with the Beacon Chain, which will trigger the change of consensus mechanism in the network, is getting closer. The event, planned for September, attracts the attention of the entire crypto community, as it is the biggest change in the history of Ethereum.
In these types of updates, which involve major changes for blockchains, problems and setbacks often arise that lead to delays in the final implementation of the changes. It happened with Cardano's Vasil and it has now happened with The Merge.
In this regard, Peter Szilágyi, Ethereum software developer, has posted on his Twitter account the discovery of a corrupt state in the network that causes data loss.
In the tweet, Szilágyi explains that the problem may have its origin in one of the pull requests that were merged into the new storage model or line pruner.
The developer has also noted, in a post on GitHub, that the problem will affect all those who are running an older version, in which the database is corrupted and causes data loss. This problem has taken longer than usual to be detected because it occurs when the system is shut down.
Go Ethereum and the solution to the problem
Fortunately, Go Ethereum, a group of network developers, have been able to solve this problem in less than a day. To do so, they have released a hotfix that fixes the error and have advised all those users who have updated the system to go back the last two days and run it again to check that everything works correctly.
Szilágyi, for his part, has advised users to wait for developers to finish their work to ensure that the version is correct.
When will The Merge be activated on the Ethereum mainnet?
Despite this error, the Ethereum Foundation has published new information on its official blog about the implementation of The Merge and they assure that it is scheduled for September.
According to Information from the Ethereum Foundation, the implementation will take place in two steps. The first of them, Bellatrix, will take place at epoch 144896 of the Beacon Chain, which will take place on September 6The second, called Paris, will be activated when the total difficulty threshold is exceeded, which is expected to happen. between September 10 and 20, and will trigger the merger between the Beacon Chain and the Ethereum mainnet.
After this second step, node operators will need to update both the consensus layer and execution layer clients to successfully migrate to the new ecosystem.
