Vitalik Buterin presents The Scourge, the new phase of Ethereum

Ethereum The Scourge cover

The next steps on the Ethereum roadmap are The Surge, The Scourge, The Verge, The Purge and The Splurge.

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has presented on his Twitter account the new Ethereum development roadmap, which aims to improve censorship resistance, the scalability and decentralization of the network.

In his tweet, the founder of Ethereum has shared a diagram with what the next steps in development of Ethereum: The Verge, The Purge and The Splurge.

Since it was implemented on September 15th The Merge on Ethereum, changing the network consensus mechanism to Proof-of-Stake, the developers have been working on the next step The Scourge. The goal of the working team is to achieve the 100.000 transactions per second by using rollups.

The Scourge, regaining users' trust

One of the main problems of Ethereum after implementation of The Merge has been the vulnerability to censorship and manipulation. Following the move to Proof-of-Stake, almost 50% of Ethereum nodes have been left in the hands of 4 big companies, which causes a lack of decentralization.

According to the roadmap presented by Buterin, The Scourge's goal is to ensure that the network is once again reliable and “credibly neutral”, avoiding centralization and other risks such as MEV.

MEV stands for “Miner Extractable Value” and occurs when a miner solves the block before other participants and can decide which transactions are placed in the block and in what order.

This allows some miners Double winning trades from the mempool and execute their transactions ahead of arbitrage seekers or anyone trying to profit.

For Buterin, a “credibly neutral” network is one that does not discriminate for or against any specific person.

As a result of this problem, critics have pointed out that Ethereum has become a network more centralized and more vulnerable to censorship

Other solutions for Ethereum centralization

For now, Buterin has not revealed technical details about The Scourge, but he has proposed a solution called “Partial Block Auction” (Partial auction of blocks), in which the block builder only has the right to decide part of the content of the block.

Additionally, Flashbots, a company developing solutions for Ethereum, has presented other proposals such as Low (Single Unifying Auctions for Value Expression) which aims to combat censorship in the Ethereum consensus layer.
