Sony to build blockchain in collaboration with Startale Labs

Startale Labs, the company that is collaborating on the development of Astar Network, will help Japanese consumer technology multinational Sony build its own blockchain.

Sony has partnered with Startale Labs through its subsidiary Sony Network Communications to form a Singapore-based joint venture that will be dedicated to developing a new blockchain.

The two large companies reported in a statement that the vision with this new blockchain is to make new users available Web3 focused products and services, in order to create potential use cases that drive mass adoption of new technologies.

Sony is one of the largest multinationals in the world, with interests in a variety of business areas, including video game and network services, music, technology, entertainment, and financial services. Now, together with Startale Labs, the Japanese multinational is seeking to become a key player in the development of the global Web3 infrastructure

Building for the Web3 era

Web3 is an increasingly trending innovation that is growing significantly around the world and is attracting major consumer brands and businesses globally to explore its full potential.

However, this innovative technology is still in its infancy, which poses significant adoption and integration challenges. To address these challenges, companies like Microsoft and Shopify are focusing on creating tools and services that make Web3 easy and frictionless to access and adopt, making it easier for people and businesses to enter the digital age.

Like these brands, Sony also wants to build the technologies and protocols that support the development of Web3, the new iteration of the Internet, open, inclusive and decentralized based on blockchain.

Sony Network Communications President and CEO Jun Watanabe said the collaboration with Startale Labs will allow Sony to leverage its expertise in fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to create A global infrastructure to support the Web3 era and drive innovation across all existing industries.

For his part, Startale Labs CEO Sota Watanabe highlighted the importance of the synergy between the assets and knowledge of both companies to “discern Web3 trends and promote them globally.”

This is not the first time that Sony Network Communications has collaborated with the Astar network. In February this year, Sota Watanabe announced the launch of the Web3 incubation program, Astar Incubation, together with the Sony subsidiary to promote the development of new real-world blockchain use cases.

The goal of this program is to expand blockchain use cases and maximize the utility and applications of NFT tokens.
