Withdrawal of validator deposits on Ethereum could arrive in March 2023

This Thursday, Ethereum developers held a new meeting to discuss the implementation of Shanghai on the blockchain network.

The implementation of the Shanghai hard fork on Ethereum could arrive in March next year, according to the last meeting which the network development team carried out this Thursday.

During the meeting, Ethereum developers focused primarily on planning the Shanghai activation, one of the most anticipated hard forks currently, due to the fact that the ethers deposited in Ethereum staking are still blocked in the Beacon Chain. With the implementation of Shanghai, Ethereum validators will have the option to withdraw their deposited assets.

Tim Beiko, one of the core developers of Ethereum, stated on his Twitter account that Withdrawals of staked ether are one of the highest priorities“Withdrawals should be prioritized and delivered relatively quickly,” the developer said.

According to the development team, impressive progress has been made so far in building the new Ethereum, which migrated to the Proof of Stake consensus protocol last September. Thanks to this progress, The developers have set March 2023 as a tentative date for the long-awaited arrival of Shanghai

However, it is also possible that the hard fork may take a little longer than expected. At the meeting, the developers also stressed the importance of having enough time to conduct all the necessary tests and ensure a successful implementation of this update.

The Shanghai Hard Fork

Shanghai will be the next major update coming to Ethereum, following the successful implementation of The Merge and before The Surge, to enable withdrawals of staked ether.

At the end of November, Ethereum developers announced the launch of a Shandong test network, intended to test the withdrawal of staked ether deposits before its implementation on the mainnet.

In this regard, Beiko commented that the developers initiated two test pilots through a multi-client development network (devnet) and that, in both cases, the withdrawals were carried out without major problems.

EIP-4844: Sharding

On the other hand, a hard fork focused on the implementation of the Ethereum improvement proposal EIP-4844 also had an important place in the developers' meeting. This improvement proposal is designed to introduce a new data-blob-transaction prototype to the network, which is the first step towards the implementation of the EIP-XNUMX. sharding of Ethereum, the technique that the network will implement to exponentially increase its scalability.

It should be noted that Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, pointed out in the middle of this year that sharding is a rather complex computing technique that It will take time to develop and perfect, so this is a long-term goal.
