The publication of this consultation document highlights that cryptocurrencies remain a focus of interest for the UK government.

HM Treasury proposes regulating cryptocurrencies to foster innovation

The document published by the UK Treasury presents a series of proposals aimed at regulating financial activities involving cryptocurrencies in British territory.

According to data from the Voucher Codes company, it is estimated that Nearly 34% of Britons are cryptocurrency owners and users, a fact that catalyzes the efforts that the government is currently carrying out to advance the regulation of the crypto industry in the country.

With the aim of creating a space that is forgiving of the cryptocurrency market, while allowing its citizens to take advantage of the opportunities offered by this technological industry, the United Kingdom wants to highlight “the technology and innovation of crypto assets and create the conditions for cryptocurrency service providers to operate and grow” in the country, HM Treasury indicated.

According to the department, establishing an appropriate regulatory framework for crypto assets will also facilitate trading in the crypto market, mitigate potential risks for users and investors involved in this sector, and help ensure stability.

UK wants to become a global crypto hub

On several occasions, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has expressed to the media the British government's desire to turn the country into an oasis for emerging technologies. Therefore, the recent proposals being presented by the Treasury to regulate the crypto industry represent a major step towards the adoption of the crypto market.

One of the main objectives outlined in the proposals in this consultation document is to open a space for discussions and ideas about the crypto industry, so that it is possible to establish a fair and transparent regulatory framework focused on the interests and protection of citizens and, at the same time, foster a fertile field for the growth of related companies in British territory.

The adoption of cryptoassets

It is clear that the acceptance of cryptocurrencies on a par with the traditional market is a process that will develop in several phases, but the UK government already wants to take the necessary steps to enable the development of quality services, while ensuring that it cushions the possible adverse effects that accompany the volatility of this emerging market.

HM Treasury's call for dialogue will be open until the end of April this year. The Treasury department hopes to gather opinions and ideas from sectors and stakeholders in the cryptocurrency industry, in order to build favourable conditions for establishing a regulatory framework suitable for its innovation and growth.

Last year, the UK launched a consultation on the taxation of decentralized finance (DeFi). Also in July, HM Treasury presented a a bill with the aim of regulating stablecoins as a means of payment in the country.
