Polygon introduces ID, its new decentralized digital identity protocol for Web3

Polygon introduces ID

Polygon ID is a decentralized digital identity protocol powered by zero-knowledge (ZK) technology.

Polygon ID digital identity solution has been selected by many app builders, including Blockchain Lock, Bloock, Fractal ID, DePay, The Sandbox, and others, to issue verifiable credentials and manage user identities, according to the developers of Polygon Network.

Through its new digital identity protocol, Polygon is offering powerful new tools to solve one of the biggest problems of the Internet: digital trust

The developers of the Ethereum scaling solution took the famous cartoon from The New Yorker, “On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog,” to point out the need to create self-sovereign identity solutions that allow users' identities to be verified without having to expose said identity publicly.

Polygon offers a solution to the problem of digital trust through Polygon ID, which allows users to verify your digital identity, to prove that they are human, in a way decentralized and private

Polygon developers recently announced that Polygon ID is now available under an open source license to the public and that this new digital identity protocol is completely self-service.

What is Polygon ID?

Polygon ID is a protocol that implements zero-knowledge proofs to help users prove and verify their identity on the web without the need to expose their private information, ensuring privacy and freedom.

The developers of Polygon Network present this new digital identity protocol as The first trustless implementation of verifiable credentials to build a decentralized identity infrastructure for Web3.

Use cases for developers

In a publication In their blog, Polygon Network developers highlighted the main use cases of Polygon ID for app developers. These include:

  • Verify the identity and credentials of users and entities on and off-chain in a decentralized and private manner.
  • Taking real-world data as verifiable credentials through ZK technology.
  • Create specific queries using the ZK-Query language.
  • Optimize user experience with passwordless login.
  • Ensure compliance and Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements without affecting user privacy.

With Polygon ID, developers can unlock a wide range of new use cases, from verifying memberships in a DAO, to strengthening the security of online payments, facilitating passwordless login, streamlining loan management, and many more.

Polygon’s public release of the ID protocol includes four new identification tools: Verifier SDK, Issuer Node, Wallet SDK, and Wallet App, making it easier for developers to integrate decentralized identity into their applications.
