In September, the OPEC Secretariat will hold a virtual workshop to discuss the applications of blockchain technology within the energy sector and in Information Technology (IT).
La Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) will hold its Second Workshop on Energy and Information Technologies (IT) in which they will debate different topics related to the application of technology blockchain, digitalization and cybersecurity in the energy sector and Information Technology (IT). The event will be held online on September 21, and will feature the participation of several important personalities in the sector, such as Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, Secretary General of OPEC.
Likewise, the invitation to participate in this Second Workshop on Energy and IT is extended to all oil-producing, exporting and consuming countries and leading international companies and organizations within the oil industry. This workshop aims to address topics of interest related to technological and energy innovation, while seeking to develop and implement new technologies to improve and optimize the efficiency of operations in this industry.

Blockchain technology within the energy industry
The qualities and characteristics of blockchain technology have the potential to positively transform the energy industry, an industry that is becoming more and more demanding, demanding higher quality, greater transparency and efficiency and a greater reduction in operating costs. That is why, thanks to the potential of this technology, the introduction of blockchain within the energy and information industry can be an effective and efficient solution to optimize current processes.
Firstly, the introduction of blockchain to the oil, energy and information technology industries will allow the different parties to have a secure, transparent, reliable and immutable digital platform to keep a single, accurate record. and detailed of all the processes carried out, while helping to reduce operating costs and execution times. Likewise, blockchain technology has the potential to transform the current model and replace manual transactions with automatic transactions that simplify all processes in all areas, especially those related to the exchange of data and information, payments and audits.
On the other hand, the introduction of smart contracts or smart contracts within different industries will also contribute to improving accountability and engagement within various sectors. In this sense, Mohammad Sanusi Barkindo, Secretary General of OPEC highlighted that:
“The energy industry, particularly the oil sector, has always been eager to utilize and develop the latest cutting-edge technologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of its operations, along with its environmental credentials.”
So, through this technology, the energy industry may have the ability to improve its performance, reduce costs, guarantee efficiency and transparency in its processes, minimize waste of products or raw materials, improve the experience of users and customers. and much more. It is a developing technology with broad potential.
Blockchain research and development by OPEC
In his statements, the Secretary General of OPEC also highlighted that the organization is constantly studying and researching new emerging technologies, especially in the development of blockchain for the digitalization of companies and cybersecurity. Furthermore, Barkindo also pointed out the current importance of these technologies and their possible future changes.
“We, at OPEC, constantly review and analyze the latest emerging technologies in our industry and their impacts on the various sectors, including the supply chain. These technologies have changed us a lot and we hope they will continue to do so in the future.”
Therefore, holding the Second Workshop on Energy and IT is of vital importance for these industries, since it will allow the debate and exchange of ideas, proposals and projects for the improvement and optimization of these industries, especially energy. Among the main topics that will be discussed in this workshop are: the future of blue hydrogen, the digitalization of companies in the energy sector, the importance of cybersecurity and the development of blockchain technology in different areas.
