MicroStrategy and BlackRock: Who owns more Bitcoin?

MicroStrategy continues to lead Bitcoin holdings among companies holding BTC and the new spot ETFs that were approved in the United States. 

Bitcoin business intelligence and software development company MicroStrategy has increased its Bitcoin holdings to 205.000 BTC, after making its last purchase of 12.000 BTC on March 10. 

So while the inflows and trading volumes of US Bitcoin spot ETFs, especially BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), are absolutely incredible, MicroStrategy still leads Bitcoin holdings among public and private companies that own the cryptocurrency, and among new investment funds listed on US exchanges. 

MicroStrategy invests more than $800 million in Bitcoin

On his social media, Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy, announced that The company has recently invested $821,7 million in BTC, raising their current holdings of the cryptocurrency. 

According to Saylor, the recent investment in bitcoin came from the convertible notes offering the company announced earlier this month. In total, MicroStrategy invested in Bitcoin the proceeds generated by the sale of convertible notes plus the excess cash it held to date. 

Thus, starting March 10, MicroStrategy holds 205.000 BTC, valued at around $14.850 million. 

Since it began investing in Bitcoin in August 2020, the company has invested $6.910 billion into the cryptocurrency, acquiring each unit of BTC it currently owns for an average price of $33.706. At the current Bitcoin price of $72.460, the company is recording around $7.940 billion in unrealized gains, a figure that demonstrates the effectiveness of its Bitcoin investment strategy. 

BlackRock closes in on MicroStrategy's BTC holdings

BlackRock's IBIT is positioning itself as a strong competitor to the largest institutional Bitcoin investor in terms of asset holdings. However, while this ETF managed to surpass MicroStrategy's Bitcoin holdings on March 8, the business intelligence company's latest addition has secured it the top spot as the largest institutional investor in the world. entity that owns the most BTC nowadays.

According to BlackRock data, the company maintains 195.985,31 BTC in reserves in your investment fund, listed on the Nasdaq.

Both are close to 1% of the total Bitcoin supply

An interesting fact about the current Bitcoin holdings held by MicroStrategy and BlackRock is that each of these companies is very close to owning 1% of the total Bitcoin supply

In MicroStrategy's case, the 205.000 BTC it holds represents about 0,977% of Bitcoin's maximum supply, while BlackRock's Bitcoin holdings of 195.985 BTC, which are held in reserve at IBIT, represent 0,933% of the cryptocurrency's total ever-existing supply of 21 million units.
