MicroStrategy confirms $600 million private offering to invest in more Bitcoin

MicroStrategy, the iconic business intelligence company that is considered the world's first company focused on Bitcoin development, will issue convertible notes to expand its current holdings in the cryptocurrency.

Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy, announced that his company has plans to issue $600 million in convertible senior notes, maturing in 2030, in a private offering whose main objective is Expand your Bitcoin reserves.

The business intelligence company began investing in Bitcoin, adopting the cryptocurrency as its primary store of value asset in 2020. Since then, has accumulated a total of 193.000 BTC, which are valued at over $12.700 billion, based on the current price of Bitcoin, which just set a new all-time high (ATH), March 5th.

Invest in more Bitcoin

Since it began investing in Bitcoin, MicroStrategy has been applying a series of financial strategies that have allowed it to persistently accumulate cryptocurrency unitsFrom cash flows, to the issuance of convertible debt notes, equity financing, and planned share sales, the company has been using different methods to fund its recurring Bitcoin purchases, while maintaining its commitment to investing in the cryptocurrency as the primary reserve asset of its corporate treasury.

Now, through the private offering it recently announced, the company will be able to take advantage of the huge increase its MSTR shares have experienced in the market. The value of these shares rose by 24% in the last week and 135% in the last month. However, in the last few hours, MicroStrategy shares have corrected by almost 5%, trading at around $1.142 per share.

The largest institutional investor in BTC

MicroStrategy currently holds the title of “the largest institutional investor in Bitcoin” in the world. As mentioned, the publicly traded company holds 193.000 BTC valued at over $12.700 billion. This is 13 times more than the amount of bitcoins held by crypto miner Marathon Digital Holdings, and almost 20 times the amount of bitcoins held by Elon Musk’s electric car company Tesla.

In its latest announcement related to the purchase of Bitcoin, MicroStrategy had highlighted that the bitcoins it owns were acquired at an average price of $31.544 dollars per unit. To date, the company has allocated a total of $ 6.090 million dollars into cryptocurrency, meaning their investment has generated unrealized gains of over $6.600 billion.

While many experts have acknowledged that MicroStrategy's Bitcoin investment strategy has proven to be a great and fruitful alternative, others, such as Peter Schiff, remain skeptical of the company's tactics.

Recently, Schiff compared Saylor was compared to the fictional Moby Dick character Captain Ahab, noting that Saylor was obsessed with Bitcoin and would lead MicroStrategy to ruin by investing in Bitcoin. In defense, Adam Back, one of the most prominent cypherpunks and cryptographers in the crypto world, argued that the company’s currently planned $600 million investment, with its private offering, is actually “conservative,” considering the technological and appreciation potential that BTC has in the market.
