StarkNet has become the first Layer 2 ZK rollup of its kind to support MetaMask and Infura.
ConsenSys, the company behind the development of MetaMask, has signed a strategic partnership with StarkWare to integrate support for StarkNet, the first permissionless decentralized ZK-rollup not natively compatible with EVM, into its flagship products MetaMask and Infura.
The company has launched a set of snap integrations that extend MetaMask’s capabilities to enable a host of additional features, including the ability to connect to non-EVM networks like StarkNet.
ConsenSys has reported that the integration will allow MetaMask’s millions of users to connect with StarkWare’s dapps.
However, for the time being, StarkNet integration is only available in the MetaMask Flask development build for developers to build and experiment on the network. For its part, Infura is offering its developers a private beta network where they can experience the power of Infura on StarkNet, to boost multi-chain development.
StarkNet is a decentralized, permissionless ZK-Rollup that operates as a second layer network on top of the Ethereum blockchain.
This rollup is able to provide Ethereum-level composability along with a high level of scalability, thus allowing dapps to scale without limitations and without compromising the security of the main network.

StarkNet’s integration with ConsenSys products is a technological milestone. This is the first snapshot that connects MetaMask to a layer-2 network not natively supported by EVM, ConsenSys noted.
For its part, from StarkWare, the development team of the blockchain company ensures We are excited to be able to provide MetaMask and Infura developers with plugins to connect to the StarkNet infrastructure, to interact with their smart contracts and decentralized applications to transact at speed.
This protocol offers developers a highly powerful set of tools to scale their applications without compromising Ethereum's security, while users will have the possibility of making faster and more accessible transactions within this blockchain ecosystem.
The StarkNet plugin on MetaMask is expected to be available to users of the crypto wallet later this year.
At the moment, only the developers of the wallet StarkNet can be experimented with via the MetaMask Flask experimental lab. In addition, ConsenSys has warned that StarkNet is still in alpha, so developers should use this implementation at their own risk.
Today, MetaMask is the most widely used web-based cryptocurrency wallet application in the crypto industry, with over 30 million registered users worldwide.
Infura, for its part, is one of the most important node infrastructure services in the Ethereum ecosystem.
