Lugano integrates Polygon PoS into its local payments application

Residents of Lugano, one of Switzerland’s largest cities and the most crypto-friendly in Europe, can now make payments with Polygon-based tokens and explore the PoS blockchain ecosystem from the MyLugano app. 

The integration of Polygon into Lugano's local payment app was announced by the blockchain developers via social network X (formerly Twitter). 

According to the developers at Polygon Labs, the digital payments app MyLugano, promoted by the Municipality of Lugano, is integrating Polygon PoS to open new experiences to users and residents of the city. Polygon highlighted that, thanks to this integration, residents of Lugano will be able to Explore the thousands of decentralized applications (DApps) that make up the Polygon PoS Web3 ecosystem, in a simple and more accessible way.  

The integration of Polygon PoS to MyLugano includes a section that will allow users to manage crypto assets and tokens from a personal custody multichain digital wallet, Polygon network developers said. 

In addition to this, the update of the local payment application will also allow users the possibility of make payments using a wide variety of tokens based on the blockchain network. 

Regarding this integration, Polygon Labs commented that the incorporation of Polygon PoS into MyLugano transforms this application into “an increasingly innovative local payment tool”, reinforcing the city’s image as the most cryptocurrency-friendly jurisdiction in Europe. 

Lugano, the European crypto capital

The city of Lugano is known as the European crypto capital for several reasons. One of them is that, in March of last year, the local government declared Bitcoin payments legal and other cryptocurrencies. In addition to this, the city has created its own token, called LVGA, which serves as a stablecoin and is accepted in hundreds of businesses for the acquisition of products and services. 

Lugano also has a plan, driven by Tether and PlanB, that is focused on accelerate the use of Bitcoin, to take advantage of its innovation and technology as a transformative force for the economy and society. 

MyLugano, the local payment app, is also part of the innovations that the city has been developing in relation to the crypto industry, and that have helped it achieve its title as the crypto capital of Europe. This app, which is used by more than 30.000 people in the city, was the winner of the award IEEE Smart City Award

According to Polygon developers, the goal of integrating Polygon PoS into this payment app is to make it easier for Lugano residents to access cryptocurrencies and use them to pay “annual taxes, parking fines, utilities, and student tuition fees,” among other things. 

The payment app is also incorporating NFT tokens to commemorate the work of artist Yuri Catania.
