Lugano formalizes Bitcoin and USDT payments for municipal services

Lugano formalizes payments with Bitcoin and Tether

The Swiss city of Lugano has officially included Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT) among the options available to residents to pay municipal taxes and other community bills.

Starting December 5, residents of the city of Lugano can use the market’s leading cryptocurrency, Bitcoin (BTC), and the largest-cap stablecoin, Tether (USDT), to pay taxes and any other bills issued in the city.

This was reported by the Swiss crypto-financial services company, Bitcoin Suisse, highlighting the integration of Bitcoin and USDT to the payment options available for community fees in Lugano, as a milestone which represents the profound technological change that the city is experiencing

The company emphasized that cryptocurrencies have been transforming the way people handle expenses related to the cities where they reside, and that Lugano now accepts its citizens to pay taxes and bills of any nature using cryptocurrencies, allowing them to enjoy a simpler, more convenient and automated payment process.

Lugano encourages the adoption of Bitcoin and blockchain technology

Until now, cryptocurrency payments in Lugano were only possible via the city's web portal. However, this option has now been officially extended to taxes and all invoices issued by the city, regardless of their nature or the amount invoiced.

With this, Lugano is moving towards the adoption of digital assets and has become one of the first cities in the world to accept cryptocurrencies such as BTC and USDT in all local transactions.

According to the Swiss company, the extension of crypto payments in Lugano is part of Plan B that is being developed together with Bitcoin Suisse and Tether, the company responsible for issuing USDT, and which seeks to accelerate the use and adoption of Bitcoin and blockchain technology, both in the local financial system of Lugano, and in the daily lives of its residents.

“Lugano is taking a big step by becoming one of the first cities to accept Bitcoin and Tether for all transactions, making payments more flexible and modern for everyone.”

In addition to allowing people to pay their taxes and community bills with Bitcoin and USDT, Lugano has also been innovating in the blockchain industry, in order to give its citizens broader access to this huge digital ecosystem.

In late November, the city announced the integration of the Polygon PoS network into its local payment app MyLugano, allowing residents to pay with Polygon network tokens, as well as the ability to explore the thousands of decentralized applications (DApps) built on this blockchain.
