London, the Ethereum update that will activate EIP-1559, will begin to be implemented on Ethereum test networks starting next Thursday, the 24th.

Ethereum developers published the London activation schedule, one of the largest upgrades to the network. The schedule published by the working team will activate London on all 3 Ethereum testnets: ropsten, Goerly y Rinkeby starting Thursday, June 24.

Its arrival on the testnets is an important step for the activation of the update, since as the team indicates, its successful implementation and development on each of the testnets will guarantee its success on the mainnet, that is, on the main Ethereum network.

If the implementation of London occurs as planned by the developers, its activation on Ethereum will tentatively occur in mid-July; although the developers emphasized that the official launch on mainnet will not occur until they verify that the update is successfully implemented on the aforementioned test networks.

London brings with it the activation of the EIP-1559, an Ethereum improvement proposal that will bring about radical changes to the network. This proposal will modify the current auction system for the network's gas fees, making the network less congested, making transactions cheaper, and ETH, The cryptocurrency native to Ethereum, will be scarcer, although it will also reduce miners' fees and profits.

London and Ethereum testnets

As the developers indicate, London is now ready to be deployed on Ethereum testnets. According to the schedule, the first testnet where the update will be implemented is ropsten, next Thursday. London activation on this network is scheduled to occur at block height 10.499.401.

Almost a week later, on June 30th, London will be implemented on the test network. Goerly, at block height #5.062.605. Finally, London is scheduled to be activated on the third and final Ethereum testnet on July 7, Rinkeby, at the height of block No. 8.897.988.

Developers are asking nodes to upgrade the versions of the clients they are running several days before London deployments occur on each testnet, to be compatible with the new update.

London, which is implemented as a hard fork within the Ethereum network, follows Berlin, which went live on the network in mid-April. Both upgrades introduce a number of improvements to the mainnet to offer greater scalability to users and developers of projects and applications as Ethereum continues its journey towards Ethereum 2.0. Thus, in addition to EIP-1559, London will also activate other improvement proposals, such as the EIP-3198, EIP-3529, EIP-3541 y EIP-3554
