The Zaragoza City Council (Spain) is celebrating the Pilar festivities in the blockchain Metaverse, a place where thousands of people from 60 countries around the world converge digitally.

The Fiestas del Pilar, Zaragoza's patron saint celebrations in honor of the city's patron saint, the Virgen del Pilar, take place in the blockchain Metaverse. As reported by Zaragoza City Council, the iconic Plaza del Pilar arrived in the Metaverse in collaboration with the firm Imascono, responsible for reproducing the square in a virtual world built on the blockchain.

Imascono made an exact copy of the Plaza del Pilar and included very realistic recreations and details of the urban space, reported the City Council. In addition, it integrated the nightlife of the Plaza del Pilar so that users can enjoy the Basilica at night and the fireworks with an impressive design for a whole week. The objective behind all this surprising digital work is to allow as many people as possible to enjoy the events of these patron saint festivities, such as the Flower Offering, visiting the Virgin of Pilar and touring the iconic square of the city of Zaragoza in a year in which the Fiestas del Pilar are suspended again.

The first digital edition of the Flower Offering was held in 2020, when the Covid pandemic prevented the festivities from being celebrated in person. Now, in this second edition built in the Metaverse, the City Council highlights the innovation of new technologies such as blockchain to offer a more realistic experience to its visitors. As he explained, thanks to the properties of the Metaverse, many improvements could be made that are impressing the visitors of the event.

Plaza del Pilar, Metaverse and NFTs

The City Council launched a collection of NFT on the blockchain of Ethereum, which are available on the Opensea marketplace. The collection is made up of 3 NFT tokens called “La Pilara”, “El Berrugón” and “La Forana”; which are part of the history and culture of Zaragoza.

The Virtual Flower Offering will be open in the Metaverse until next Sunday, October 17, and those interested can access it through the official website of the event. In addition to the virtual offering, visitors can enjoy all the activities offered by the digital and immersive version of the Plaza del Pilar, including a game called #RetoOfrenda. The winners of this game can receive different prizes, including tourist experiences, a stay in a hotel, a dinner in a restaurant and even the NFTs from the collection.

Statistics 2020

The first digital celebration of the Fiestas del Pilar in the Metaverse brought together a total of 239.106 unique users, who made 361.230 visits and more than 147.700 digital offerings. It should be noted that these visitors came from all over the world, as indicated by the City Council.

In 2021, the innovation of digital worlds and the ease with which thousands of people connect and interact in them allows us to offer an unprecedented experience on the “big day of the city of Zaragoza”, which is connecting thousands of people from more than 60 countries around the world.

“This unprecedented municipal commitment to innovate and transfer the city of Zaragoza's big day to virtual worlds, deepens the union between tradition and technology, as well as all generations in a single 3D space”, explained the city council.

With this initiative, Zaragoza City Council becomes the first public body in Spain to open a space in the blockchain Metaverse.
