IOTA chooses PoS to be more scalable and eco-friendly

IOTA Blockchain Chooses PoS to Be More Scalable and Eco-Friendly

IOTA developers have officially launched the IOTA 2.0 public testnet, a new DLT focused on scalability and efficiency through the Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus protocol.

IOTA 2.0 introduces the Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, replacing the Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, to the Internet of Things (IoT)-focused DLT network.

This substantial change in the infrastructure of distributed ledger technology occurs amidst the goals of scalability and greater efficiency outlined by its developers. In a release Published on May 15, the IOTA team announced the launch of the new network, with the launch of the IOTA 2.0 public testnet.

“This marks the culmination of a multi-year effort to improve the infrastructure of the IOTA network”, the network developers wrote.

IOTA 2.0 moves away from PoW

The changes that IOTA is introducing in the new network aim to improve its scalability and reduce its environmental impact of its operations. In the statement, the developers wrote that by moving away from PoW, DLT can operate at a faster speed while reducing resource consumption, something the team believes is essential for sustainability in the new digital age.

In addition to the above, IOTA is also introducing important changes to become a more decentralized and secure network. The team stated that IOTA 2.0 eliminates the Coordinator figure, the component that was responsible for managing the network's consensus. In IOTA 2.0, this element no longer exists, marking the network's transition to a fully decentralized system, the developers noted.

Refining the development of the new network

The development of IOTA 2.0 began several years ago, when the developers set out to turn it into a democratic and autonomous network, offering security and economic opportunities for all.

Now, with the launch of the public testnet, the vision of IOTA 2.0 has begun to take shape, representing a fundamental stage in exploring new concepts, functionalities and utilities of the network.

The public testnet is open for developers, enthusiasts and network partners to experiment with IOTA 2.0. This will serve to test different implementations and identify any existing bugs or flaws, before the official launch of the network.

Power in the hands of users

The ultimate goal of IOTA 2.0 is to provide users with access to a network that is truly decentralized and capable of giving them back control and stewardship over their own assets and digital identity, fostering digital autonomy.

Through the PoS consensus protocol, IOTA 2.0 promotes active and long-term community engagement, offering network validators rewards through staking or token delegation.
