Spanish artist Pino Ojeda is the star of the first exhibition of works of art in the Metaverse at the Gran Canaria Museum.
The Museum of Fine Arts of Gran Canaria has created a virtual room in the Metaverse to celebrate the first digital edition of the monthly art exhibition “Miradas a la Colección”.
The virtual art exhibition, called “Isla de Arte”, will open this Tuesday, April 11, starting at 19:00 p.m. The Museum of Fine Arts of Gran Canaria will offer visitors a completely virtual and immersive experience that will feature the Gran Canaria artist Pino Ojeda, through her iconic work “Gruta polar”, designed in 1966.
People who wish to enter the Museum's virtual room must fill out a pre-registration form and create an avatar, Indian the museum through its website.
In addition to the work of the renowned Spanish artist, the Museum of Fine Arts of Gran Canaria will exhibit another 250 works that represent “the most important art exhibition of recent decades.” Among them are pieces from the public collection of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria at the Casa de Colón, from the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) and from the Centro de Artes Plásticas.
The virtual exhibition “Island of Art” through the Museum of Fine Arts in the Metaverse will be available to the public until June 18.
The metaverse, a new dimension for art
This will be the first time that the Gran Canaria Fine Arts Museum will hold its art conference “Views of the Collection” in the virtual world. According to the Museum, the event has been held monthly since 2013 to show attendees, through talks and exhibitions, various forms of artistic and cultural expression.
Ángeles Alemán, a professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and an expert in art history and the person who will direct the art exhibition in the Metaverse, explained that visitors will be able to enjoy online guided tours, family workshops and more, during the art exhibition.
The virtual experience will be completely free and the art exhibition room will be accessible through virtual reality glasses, a computer, mobile phone or tablet, making it easy for hundreds of people to enter from anywhere.
Pino Ojeda arrives in the Metaverse
Pino Ojeda was a Spanish writer and artist known for being the first woman to found an art gallery in the Canary Islands. Her work “Gruta polar” evokes a magical language, composed of chance and sensitivity, explains Alemán.
The work from more than 50 years ago was chosen as the focal point of the “Isla de Arte” art exhibition during the museum’s first virtual edition of “Miradas a la Colección” (Views of the Collection), as it is the most widely recognized work by the Spanish artist and the one that sparked the greatest interest in informalist abstraction. “The interesting thing is that, by titling the piece, it fixes it in reality,” explains Ángeles Alemán.
Interest in the Metaverse is far from the frenzy it caused last year. However, companies continue to invest in this technological innovation, experimenting with new use cases and applications that provide utility and value to society.
