In Galicia, the Consello Regulador DOP del Mexillón is implementing blockchain technology to strengthen its structure and guarantee traceability and quality in the mussel supply chain.
The autonomous community of Galicia, Spain, known for the marketing of mussels, has set out to guarantee traceability in the value chain of this mollusk through blockchain technology.
To this end, the Galician Mexillón DOP Regulatory Council has partnered with the companies Kiwa and NTT Data, related to certification and digital development, to develop a pilot plan that will allow it use the immutability of information recorded in the blockchain in order to guarantee the quality, traceability and safety of this crop.
The objective of the autonomous community with blockchain technology is create a new reliable digital information recording system and tamper resistant to ensure that the products obtained from the exploitation, processing and distribution of mussels meet the strictest quality standards required in this important productive activity, in order to offer consumers a final product of optimal quality.
In addition to blockchain technology, the Galician Mussel DOP Regulatory Council, responsible for promoting the quality of Galician mussels, will also integrate innovations such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) into its new registration system.
Blockchain technology will help Galicia guarantee traceability and quality to its consumers
According to the Spanish company of economic sector information, Alimarket, Galicia plans to use Automated systems for data collection associated with mussel production through the use of dedicated IoT-based sensors. The company also explained that the Mexillón DOP Regulatory Council will apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create new predictive analysis models, while blockchain technology will be used for the immutable recording of information.
This new system will allow consumers to access important information about all the stages involved in the production and distribution of mussels, such as the place and dates of capture, data on product refrigeration, customs records, quality certification and other data that will guarantee their origin, processing, transport and distribution; all this until they reach the consumer's table.
The company highlighted that the Spanish autonomous community is trusting in the blockchain as secure and unalterable support medium for the protection of data and information to strengthen its structure and strict control systems in the mussel production process.
Efficiency in the value chain of Galician mussels
The new blockchain-based information system developed by the autonomous community of Galicia is part of the Musselblock project, announced by the community's regulatory council at the end of last month.
Musselblock is an initiative coordinated by the Galician food cluster, in which 9 organisations and companies associated with the food sector participate with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.
This initiative is being developed with the aim of guaranteeing traceability and increasing efficiency throughout the certified mussel value chain, which is one of the most economically important activities for Galicia.
The Musselblock project allows blockchain technology to once again demonstrate its usability and applicability in various aspects of human activity, such as the food industry, transforming production processes and ensure safety thanks to its unique features.
