Fireblocks, the well-known blockchain infrastructure company, has recently announced the acquisition of BlockFold, a well-known smart contract development and consulting firm that specializes in advanced tokenization projects for financial institutions.

The acquisition aims to strengthen Fireblocks’ tokenization capabilities. The company thus seeks to provide its clients with a complete service layer that includes advisory, token customization, orchestration and distribution of services through the Fireblocks Network.

Fireblocks strengthens its position in the crypto sector

Fireblocks was founded in June 2018, by Michael Shaulov and Pavel Berengoltz, it is a digital asset infrastructure company. It offers custody, settlement and issuance services to financial institutions and companies. Since its development until now, Fireblocks has become one of the fastest growing and most relevant players in the crypto sector.

To achieve this, the platform uses a combination of security measures, such as multi-party computation (MPC), data encryption, and the use of role-based authentication (RBAC), all to protect its clients’ digital assets. Clients include some of the world’s leading financial institutions and companies, such as BNY Mellon, HSBC, Fidelity Digital Assets, and BlockFi.

Tokenization, the key to everything

With this history, Fireblocks' move to acquire BlockFold seeks to strengthen the position of this company, especially with the vision of strengthening the different products and services that Fireblocks offers in the institutional tokenization sector. Let us remember that tokenization aims to digitize and integrate the world around us into the blockchain, facilitating and improving the security related to the management of digital assets.

This is highly relevant because Fireblocks aims with this new acquisition to provide services that revitalize the processes and infrastructure of the traditional banking and financial market. At the same time, Fireblocks continues to collaborate with its tokenization partners Bitbond, Securitize, Securrency, Tokeny and others to create an open tokenization market for clients who may require support for a specific use case.

This is very much in line with projections for the sector. For example, BCG projects that blockchain tokenization of financial assets will grow to become a $16 trillion market by 2030 and account for 10% of all financial assets. Against this backdrop, Fireblocks has seen rapid growth in client demand, with a 350% increase in tokenization projects between 2022 and 2023, and 75% of top-tier financial institutions exploring tokenization through its platform.

Given this reality, Michael Shaulov, co-founder and CEO of Fireblocks, has commented the following regarding the acquisition of BlockFold:

BlockFold’s expertise fills an important gap in the market, tailoring custom solutions for some of our most sophisticated clients and prospects in the banking and financial institution space. We already speak a common language to understand these clients’ requirements at an architectural level. Bringing BlockFold’s expertise in-house means we can better serve Tier 1 financial institutions to quickly and seamlessly bring tokenization projects to production and new assets to the blockchain. Additionally, we can continue to innovate and expand our offering and adapt our approaches as the market continues to mature and evolve.

Institutional players in the crypto world

This vision seeks to bring traditional financial institutions closer together, offering security and trust. Let us recall that Fireblocks has been one of the most relevant players in CBDC or tokenized bond projects. For example, in May 2023, Fireblocks enabled the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange and the Israeli Ministry of Finance to tokenize and settle a government bond following a live auction with five national and seven global banks.

As the sole issuers of Israeli government bonds, both parties now have a credible path to tokenizing Israel’s government debt market, worth around $15 billion a year. Fireblocks expects the value of tokenized bonds on the blockchain to reach $400 billion in the next three years, with the goal of reaching $2028 trillion by XNUMX, and with all these moves the company aims to secure a significant space in this sector.

In light of this reality, Francois Schonken, recently appointed Senior Director, Tokenization Business Leader at Fireblocks, commented:

While there are numerous standards for tokenized assets, large financial institutions often require a higher degree of customization of smart contracts, as well as orchestration and integration into legacy systems. We have always appreciated how the Fireblocks team understands this at a fundamental level when we have worked with them in the past. We couldn’t be more excited to be part of this team and unlock even more value from tokenization and decentralized finance to support our clients.

In this strategy the acquisition of BlockFold is vital. BlockFold has successfully assisted numerous leading financial institutions with projects requiring flexible and customizable solutions, for example, tokenization of money, including tokenized deposits, stablecoins, and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs); tokenizing assets such as carbon credits, real estate, and investment funds; and decentralized market infrastructure.

BlockFold’s customers include major institutions such as the Bank for International Settlements Innovation Center, the Swiss National Bank, Banque de France, Singapore’s Ministry of Finance, the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, and the National Australia Bank, many of which are also Fireblocks customers. This familiarity will help Fireblocks deliver immediate impact for customers and provide additional synergies to Fireblocks’ R&D advancements.
