Meta is focused on developing its own metaverse and one of the first steps will be to implement NFTs on Facebook user profiles.

Goal is focused on develop Web 3 functionalities that bring their platforms ever closer to the desired metaverse. In May, Instagram began implementing NFTs in the profile images of its users and now Facebook will be the next to have this functionality.

At the moment, this functionality is limited to a group of American content creators who have been selected by Facebook itself. With this new feature, creators will be able display your NFT collections on your profiles, under a new tab that will be added labeled “Digital Collections”, similar to the one that has already been implemented on Instagram.

The global deployment of this functionality will be slow, since they want to avoid bugs and problems with NFTs, which is why they have not offered dates for a possible global launch, although they have confirmed their intentions to bring this functionality to other networks such as WhatsApp.

The feature has been announced by Navdeep Singh, product manager at Meta, who has shared several screenshots of this new feature on Twitter. Apparently, users will be able to share their NFTs as if they were images, either on the profile or on the timeline.

When a user clicks on one of the NFTs, they have access to all the details of the image and the collection to which it belongs, as well as information about its creator. For now, Meta has explained that functionality is available for Ethereum and Polygon NFTs, but in the future they hope to add compatibility for Solana and Flow blockchains.

What they have announced from Meta is that they will “post” your NFT collections on Facebook, either in the timeline or in your profile image will not have any additional cost, since you won't have to pay fees to do it. They have also detailed that, for now, there are no plans to allow NFT collections to be used in Facebook Ads.

Furthermore, to reduce the possible environmental impact caused by the minting of NFTs, Meta has committed to using renewable energy sources.

Mark Zuckerberg's plans with Facebook and the metaverse

Since Mark Zuckerberg announced the change of brand name and his intention to focus on developing a metaverse and Web 3 tools, Meta has been working on the implementation of these new functionalities, with the iIntegration of NFTs on Instagram as a first step.

At that moment, Meta wanted create a bridge between traditional and digital artists, using Meta's Augmented Reality (AR) technology, which allowed Instagram NFTs to be projected in physical spaces.

Zuckerberg is betting on NFTs as a gateway to the metaverse due to the importance that non-fungible tokens have had in the expansion of crypto and Web 3, as well as the variety of use cases they could have.
