The Shanghai upgrade has been successfully deployed on the Sepolia testnet, allowing Ethereum developers to make staking withdrawals as normal.
Shanghai is getting closer to hitting the Ethereum mainnet.
The upcoming Ethereum upgrade will enable withdrawals of staked ETH locked in the Beacon Chain, making it one of the most anticipated updates by the crypto community.
So far, Shanghai has been successfully deployed on two Ethereum testnets, Zhejiang and Sepolia. It is now expected to be deployed on a third testnet, Goerli, before its expected arrival on the mainnet.
According to the blockchain network developers’ estimated roadmap, Shanghai could be rolling out to the Ethereum mainnet as early as next month.
Shanghai successfully reaches Sepolia
Terence Tsao, Ethereum researcher and code developer at Arbitrum, one of the main scalability protocols of this network, announced via Twitter the successful implementation of Shanghai on the Sepolia test network.
Despite some validator nodes of the Prsym staking client being out of sync at the start of the Shanghai dress rehearsal, the implementation of the blockchain upgrade has ended successfully, the developer said.
The transition from Ethereum to Proof of Stake
Ethereum marked a milestone in blockchain history by changing the way it mines its blocks on the network. Instead of using Proof of Work (PoW) mining, Ethereum opted for block validation with Proof of Stake (PoS), a consensus mechanism that allows it to use a lower amount of energy, while improving its efficiency and increasing the speed of creating new blocks.
La Ethereum transition from PoW to PoS started in mid-September last year.
However, this transition has not yet been fully completed. The upcoming network upgrade, Shanghai, is part of this goal by enabling the mainnet to process validator staking withdrawals.
Prior to its arrival on mainnet, Shanghai will be tested on the third and final testnet, Goerli, although Ethereum developers have not yet announced a specific date for this new test.
