ENS to launch .box to integrate Web3 domains with Web2 browsers

Ethereum Name Services (ENS) will integrate the .box domain name, which is compatible with traditional web browsers.

Ethereum’s decentralized domain name protocol, Ethereum Name Services (ENS), will route users of the blockchain network to traditional web browsers via the .box domain name, which will be launched to the public in September this year in collaboration with the company MyBox.

Nick Johnson, founder and lead developer of ENS, said on Twitter that .box will be the first top-level domain name (TLD) with the ability to route on a blockchain-native domain name system (DNS), as ENS does.

Decentralized Web3 domain names on Web2

The integration of the .box domain name into Ethereum Name Services will allow users of the protocol the ability to create and facilitate access to decentralized websites, using the same domain name on both the blockchain-powered web, known as Web3, and the traditional web, known as Web2.

ENS users will also be able to use .box for traditional web services such as profiles and email, as well as Web3 services such as wallets, decentralized messaging protocols, and to store digital identity information.

With this integration, ENS developers seek to create a bridge between Web2 and Web3, to facilitate the use and adoption of decentralized services and the Ethereum network, offering an innovative connection point between the blockchain and traditional web browsers.

Johnson highlighted that the new decentralized web domain will serve to Bringing decentralized use cases to a wider audience.

2,8 million decentralized domain names

Ethereum Name Services is one of the most popular decentralized domain name systems in the crypto/blockchain ecosystem. It is a protocol that allows human-readable names to be assigned to Ethereum addresses and other resources, such as smart contracts, for easy access, use, and integration with other services.

Currently, ENS already has 2,8 million decentralized domain names created since its launch.

The protocol has had a very interesting few months of growth this year. The latest statistics shared by its developers on Twitter, corresponding to April, show that 27.000 new .eth registrations were created on ENS during that month. The protocol also recorded $1,7 million in revenue and set a new record for avatar registrations, with a total of 3.001 registrations.
