An Ethereum Improvement Proposal, EIP-6969, will unlock new monetization opportunities and additional revenue for developers building applications on Ethereum.
La EIP-6969 improvement proposal introduces a new mechanism that will allow Ethereum layer 2 networks and EVM-compatible networks to implement Contractually Guaranteed Revenue (CSR), offering developers the ability to monetize their creations on the Web3.
This improvement proposal was presented this month on the Ethereum Magicians forum. Its creators explained that CSRs allow developers to claim a percentage of all gas fees paid by users when interacting with smart contracts that they helped create. In this way, it will be possible for developers to access a potentially lucrative and sustainable stream of income, which rewards their work and effort, as well as incentivizing the creation and development of new applications in the blockchain ecosystem.
One of the creators of EIP-6969, Kevin Owocki, told Blockworks that there aren't many opportunities currently for developers to monetize their work in a sustainable way.
Encouraging the construction of Web3 applications
The EIP-6969 was designed as the goal of contribute to constructive activity on Ethereum, one of the most important networks for the development of Web3.
As one of the largest and most capitalized blockchain ecosystems in the crypto space, Ethereum application developers play an important role in the decentralization of the Internet by creating innovative solutions that leverage the advantages of blockchain technology and digital assets to give rise to open and permissionless protocols that facilitate different types of services to its users, while giving them back control over their identity, data, and information.
However, while Ethereum developers can transform the current Internet into a more attractive, equitable, fair and participatory web, as Owocki mentioned, there are many current difficulties that prevent them from monetizing their creations and collaborative work and that often discourage them from continuing to build on Web3.
Therefore, EIP-6969 seeks reward developers and creators based on their work and collaborations, as a way to motivate them to continue building and foster the growth of the crypto ecosystem.
New revenue for DApp developers
EIP-6969 is an adaptation of the EIP-1559 Improvement Proposal. However, the Improvement Proposal in question introduces a new mechanism that allows redirecting a portion of the gas fees sent to the Sequencer every time a smart contract is called, to reward the work of the developer who created the contract.
In this way, when a developer implements a smart contract on the Ethereum blockchain, the address with which that contract has been implemented will be attached to it and, thus, when the contract is executed, a percentage of the gas fees will return to that address, remunerating the work done.
According to Owocki, EIP-6969 offers an alternative to closing the labor gap that exists in second-layer networks, which require a larger number of developers to continue building.
On the other hand, it is important to highlight that EIP-6969 seeks to reward the work not only of the developers who have created a smart contract, but also of those who have contributed to modifying or updating the code to implement new improvements or for its maintenance.
