Dencun officially launches on Ethereum mainnet

Ethereum lead developer Tim Beiko said that Dencun is the most complex upgrade that has been released on Ethereum since The Merge.

Dencun was successfully activated on the Ethereum mainnet today, March 13. The rollout of this major upgrade occurred just as planned by the blockchain network developers.

The upgrade was successfully completed after it was activated on the mainnet, in the era 269568The entire process was broadcast live by the network developers via YouTube.

Blobs reach the mainnet

With the launch of Dencun, data blobs began landing on mainnet blocks, Ethereum lead developer Tim Beiko noted on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Beiko also highlighted that during the process of activating this update on the main network they were More teams involved than ever before“There were more teams than ever involved in the process, and somehow everything worked out smoothly…! Grateful to be working with all of them, on the next one!” the developer wrote on the social platform.

A new era for Ethereum scalability

This upgrade, which launched EIP-4844 on the Ethereum mainnet alongside a host of other EIPs, aims to increase the efficiency of Layer 2-based chains on the network.

Dencun introduces data blobs and a new temporary storage space for data, which will enable L2 chains to process a more substantial load of data more efficiently. Dencun also promises to reduce fees and gas usage on L2 networks, thus improving scalability without compromising security.

The deployment of this upgrade supports the importance of L2 chains and rollups for Ethereum scaling and brings the network one step closer to becoming a blockchain with improved performance and fees.

Anthony Sassano, creator of The Daily Gwei, a news site focused on Ethereum, pointed out that the successful activation of Dencun ushers Ethereum into a new era of scalability. Meanwhile, Lark Davis, a Bitcoin investor, emphasized that the arrival of the new update to the Ethereum mainnet will change the rules of the game.

Dencun is expected to reduce transaction fees on L2 networks up to 90%, allowing these solutions to become much more accessible to ordinary users.

L2s prepare to support Dencun

Ethereum L2 development teams have already spoken out about Dencun and the integration of the upgrade into their respective blockchain ecosystems. In the case of Arbitrum, its developers explained that they will deploy the ArbOS Atlas upgrade to implement Dencun on the network, and that it will be executable starting March 14. Meanwhile, Base developers had reported that Dencun would have support from day one, while Blast suffered a brief outage due to issues related to the implementation of the upgrade. Ethereum-based protocols, such as 1inch, have also expressed their enthusiasm for the improvement in costs that are coming for L2 network users.

Once Dencun is deployed on Ethereum layer 2 chains and blob transactions start being recorded, users will be able to see substantial changes in transaction fees, indicated the developers of Arbitrum.

At the time of this writing, the price of Ethereum remains trading very close to $3.980. The cryptocurrency approached $4.100 early Wednesday morning, correcting a few hours later to $3.900 per ETH.
