Amendment to South Korea's Public Officials Ethics Law Approved to Include Cryptocurrencies

📍‌Public officials will have to disclose their cryptocurrency holdings in South Korea. An amendment to the Public Officials Ethics Law was unanimously approved in the National Assembly of South Korea, so the government will require officials to declare their ownership in cryptocurrencies as a measure to fight corruption, money laundering money and unethical practices.

Last year, the country's National Health Insurance Service was embroiled in a corruption scandal when one of its officials stole nearly 4.000 billion won (about $2,8 million) in cryptocurrency and then fled the country. This same week, it was learned that four employees of the Coinone company stole nearly $2,3 million dollars using more than 40 crypto assets while they were listed on the Korean platform. Likewise, it was learned that politician Kim Nam-kuk, of the democratic party, kept nearly $4,5 million in cryptocurrencies on the Wemix platform. When the news broke, other Korean politicians and even members of the National Assembly also moved significant amounts of money in cryptocurrencies.

Now, with the modifications made to the Public Officials Ethics Law, public officials and employees are required to report their ownership in crypto assets in their asset declaration.
