US Congressman Pete Sessions has said in a tweet that the US Bitcoin mining industry could lay the groundwork for the nation's energy independence.
Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, energy independence has become a central issue for many nations that depend on gas and oil from Eastern Europe. US President Joe Biden himself expressed his concerns about this issue and the need to finding alternative energy sources, which help achieve energy independence.
In this context, Pete Sessions, congressman for the state of Texas, pointed out in a tweet that Bitcoin mining could be a fundamental pillar to achieve this goal. The state of Texas currently produces 14% of the world's Bitcoin hash rate.
Congressman Sessions’ post has sparked a wave of support in the crypto community, but has also earned him some criticism, with some saying the comment was “not very specific.”
This is not the first time a Texas representative has spoken out in this regard. State Senator Ted Cruz said a few months ago that cryptocurrency mining can consume excess energy during periods of low demand and reduce it when demand increases.
Towards energy independence with Bitcoin
As vague as Congressman Sessions' comment may be, the truth is that cryptocurrency mining analysts and experts have been pointing out the Potential of the mining sector to strengthen the energy industry in the country.
In this sense, mining centers could take advantage of the renewable energyThese flexible data centers can harness energy from their own plants and networks, using green energy sources, such as the example of the nuclear “mini-reactors” used by the company Oklo, which can generate up to 180 MW continuously.
On the other hand, the US Energy Information Administration has included Texas as the main supplier of wind energy in the countryThis makes the state a viable mining hub, and therefore its efforts to expand the number of mining sites could have a positive impact on US energy policies.
The mining sector also favors the use of and access to renewable energy. This, according to analysts and researchers, can reduce the use of the public energy grid and alleviate the impact that cryptocurrency mining has on the environment.
New York against cryptocurrency mining
For its part, the New York State Assembly's Environmental Conversation Committee voted yesterday, Tuesday, March 22, in favor of a bill that, if implemented, will ban cryptocurrency mining in the state for at least two years.
The bill has been sponsored under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which requires that greenhouse gas emissions in the state be reduce by 85% before 2050 and net emissions are reduced to zero.
For this bill to become effective, it must first be approved by the New York Assembly. From there, it will then go to the Senate, where it will also have to be approved, and finally, it must be signed by the state governor to become a formal law.
In this respect, the New York Assembly's bill has a difficult path ahead, as a similar proposal was rejected in early March by the European Parliament.
