BlackRock assures that Bitcoin is the most requested cryptocurrency by its clients

BlackRock's head of digital assets, Robert Mitchnick, says the global asset manager's clients have an overwhelming interest in Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency.

Speaking at Bitcoin Investor Day, an event hosted by Reflexivity Research and moderated by Anthony Pompliano in New York City on March 22, Mitchnick discussed the asset management company's interests and goals in the cryptocurrency world.

According to the executive, BlackRock's main focus is on Bitcoin, because it is the cryptocurrency that is being overwhelmingly most requested by its clients and investors.

Mitchnick said his clients have some interest in other crypto assets on the market, such as Ethereum. However, it is Bitcoin that is currently attracting all the attention on Wall Street, so the executive clarified that BlackRock remains focused on offering various investment solutions that are based on the main cryptocurrency on the market, in order to satisfy the needs and demands of investors.

Bitcoin is BlackRock's number one priority

According to Mitchnick, Bitcoin is currently the focus of institutional investment. While the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has been cautious for many years regarding investment vehicles based on this cryptocurrency, in January of this year it finally gave its approval to a dozen investment vehicles that allow exposure to Bitcoin, including the one requested by BlackRock, the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT).

This Bitcoin-backed investment vehicle dominates the market of cryptocurrency ETFs, reaching more than $15.400 billion in assets under management in just two months.

Following the success of this Bitcoin investment product, the company has launched other cryptocurrency-related financial vehicles, such as the tokenized BUIDL fund on the Ethereum blockchain. BlackRock also submitted an application form to the SEC to create an Ethereum-based spot ETF. All of this has created expectations about the possibility of BlackRock delving deeper into the cryptocurrency market and targeting other crypto assets to expand its clients’ exposure to digital assets, through regulated financial vehicles and instruments.

However, Mitchnick clarified during the event that BlackRock's number one priority remains Bitcoin.

While the asset manager’s clients and investors have some interest in Ethereum, the executive stressed that BlackRock is not fully focusing on other cryptocurrencies. He said that “there is a misconception in the cryptocurrency industry that the asset manager will have a ‘long tail’ of other services” backed by crypto assets, Mitchnick said during the talk at the Bitcoin Investor Day.

A new infrastructure system in finance

In addition to emphasizing BlackRock’s current interests and priorities in the crypto world, Mitchnick took advantage of his speech to highlight how cryptocurrencies, new technologies, and the traditional financial system are coming together. He noted that technological innovations and the technology of the current system are converging, which is allowing the construction of “a new infrastructure system in finance.”
