The Royal Spanish Academy (RAE) has integrated the words “Bitcoin” and “Cryptocurrency” into update 23.5 of the Spanish Language Dictionary (DLE).
RAE, the Royal Spanish Academy founded in 1713 by Juan Manuel Fernández Pacheco y Zúñiga, presented the 23.5 update of its Dictionary of the Spanish Language, which includes words such as “Bitcoin” and “Cryptocurrency”. Specifically, the RAE explains that the new edition of the DLE has opened a space for new terms that have been born directly from the language of the Internet, social networks and new technologies.
“Bitcoin” and “Cryptocurrency” are two words that have become widely adopted globally. Over the past 12 years, the popularity of cryptocurrencies and digital assets has grown to such an extent that they have taken over our societies, integrating into almost every area of daily life.
The Royal Spanish Academy explained that the digitalization and technification of societies at a global level has brought with it the creation of new words that reflect the current technological change. Therefore, in the 23.5 update of the DLE dictionary, new terms and definitions can be seen, such as: bitcoin, muzzle, cyber bullying, Cybercrime, cryptocurrency, geolocate o webinar, explained the RAE. It is important to remember that the Royal Spanish Academy considers the word Bitcoin as an acute word ending in “n”, so in March of this year it suggested that it should be accented.
