Bitcoin Pizza Day: A day to honor the 1st Bitcoin transaction recorded in the real world

Every May 22, the bitcoiner community celebrates Bitcoin Pizza Day, in tribute to the first transaction where Bitcoin was used to purchase a physical good.

Bitcoin Pizza Day is a celebration that was born in the heart of the crypto community and aims to celebrate the first recorded Bitcoin transaction in the real world. This transaction was made by programmer Laszlo Hanyecz, in May 2010, to buy two family pizzas that are currently known as the two most expensive pizzas in history.

In short, it is a transaction that has become a historic event and reminds the entire cryptocurrency community of the transformative potential of new technologies.

May 22, 2010, a historic day for Bitcoin

May 22, 2010 is remembered as the day when Bitcoin was first used as a means of payment in the real world. A few days earlier, Hanyecz had published on the Bitcoin Talk forum who wanted to buy two pizzas using bitcoins.

Specifically, the programmer said he was willing to pay 10.000 BTC to anyone who offered to bring him two large pizzas home. Hanyecz described how he liked pizzas and, a few days later, confirmed that he had successfully exchanged 10.000 BTC for two family pizzas.

Hanyecz sent the 10.000 BTC transaction to Jeremy Sturdivant, a 19-year-old student who used the alias “Jercos” and who ordered the pizzas from Papa John's. Sturdivant paid the pizzas to the fast food chain and sent them to Hanyecz's house, accepting the 10.000 BTC as payment from the programmer.

Bitcoin Pizza Day, as that historic day is known when Hanyecz bought two pizzas with bitcoins, opened the doors for the cryptocurrency to leave the virtual world into the real world, explore a new use case and be appreciated in a way that is simply extraordinary.

At that time, 10.000 bitcoins were worth approximately $41, and it was the first time (on record) that the cryptocurrency, the open source decentralized electronic money system created by Satoshi Nakamoto, was used as a means of payment in the real world.

As of today, the price of Bitcoin has appreciated significantly and exceeds $70.000 per unit, so these two pizzas would be worth no less than $ 700 million dollars.
