Environmentalists push Bitcoin for Ethereum-like consensus change
📍Following the completion of The Merge on Ethereum, environmental groups are pressuring Bitcoin to migrate to PoS. Groups like Greenpeace and the Environmental Working Group are pressing Bitcoin developers to change the blockchain network’s consensus mechanism. Like Ethereum, which has successfully migrated to Proof of Stake, environmentalists hope that Bitcoin can reduce its energy consumption by using a consensus protocol that is less energy intensive than Proof of Work.
Bitcoiners and the crypto community are responding to the pressures being exerted by these environmental groups. On Twitter, MicroStrategy CEO and a strong Bitcoin advocate, Michael Saylor, has shared a report on Bitcoin mining and the environment.
Saylor said he published this report because of the large amount of misinformation and bad propaganda circulating on the subject lately. “I thought it was important to share the truth regarding Bitcoin, mining and the environment”he said.
The @thecryptoc0up1e account also shared a video in which he shows not just “a bunch of computers using energy to secure the Bitcoin network,” but an industry capable of using the energy wasted on the planet to sustain an alternative financial system that benefits millions of people globally.
“Bitcoin mining is powered by a larger mix of sustainable energy than any major country or industry in the world”, is indicated in the video.
It is worth remembering that block mining in Bitcoin is sustained, at almost 60%, by renewable energy sourcesCompanies engaged in this activity are shifting their business towards sustainable energy sources to minimize their environmental impact and carbon footprint. In addition, various studies confirm that the current energy consumption of the Bitcoin network represents less than 0,5% of global energy.

Following the Ethereum merge, the Ethereum Classic hash rate increased by 55,17%. Currently, the hash rate of this network is 268,8 TH/s, according to data from the 2miners platform.
