Blockchain and NFT in times of pandemic

Beatport is a music retailer and global home for hundreds of DJs, producers and their fans, which was inspired by the possibility of “dancing together again” after the thousands of entertainment and dance venues that closed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic reopened their doors to the world. The company is betting on technology blockchain and NFTs as a way to stay connected with their millions of fans, and also to connect with the broad customer base interested in buying and selling unique and creative digital goods like NFTs.

Beatport is opening its doors to innovation, and is preparing to accept Bitcoin, the first and most important cryptocurrency by market capitalization, as a means of payment starting next June.

“In the midst of a pandemic, the DJ/Producer community is keen to lead the industry towards adopting new technologies and innovative means to engage with their fans, and the world of cryptocurrencies and non-fungible tokens are a clear example of this fact.”

Although the frenzy for NFT tokens has subsided in recent days, artists continue to bet on this new way of expressing their art and talent. Also, in times of pandemic, the Turf or horse racing has become popular on the blockchain.

Zed Run It is a horse racing game that runs on the blockchain Ethereum, and although it was created in 2019, it was not until this year, in the midst of the pandemic and the NFT craze, that it gained the interest of a large number of fans.

From CryptoKitties to Zed Run

Now, not only virtual kittens are being bred on the Ethereum blockchain, but also digital horses that can be worth as much as a real thoroughbred. Zed Run, designed by the company Virtually Human, allows users to own a stable, buy and own a racehorse, and compete with other players around the world in a new metaverse, which displays the horses in 3D format.

Virtual horses in the game are valued between $15.000 and $125.000, depending on their breed, lineage, stature and purity. The horses can be traded on the OpenSea NFT marketplace, and users will have ownership over their racing horses.

$125.000 virtual horses

Sporty, a media outlet specializing in sports racing, notes that users are investing real money to buy and breed these virtual horses. According to its reportZed Run sold about 4.450 digital horses in 2019, with an average value of $30 per horse. However, to date, the gaming platform has sold more than 11.000 digital horses, and bred another 8.000, which are worth around $15.000. The rarest ones have sold for as much as $125.000.

Chris Ebeling, co-founder of Virtually Human Studio (VHS), stated that the Zed Run metaverse is the equivalent of teleporting the horses from a parallel timeline, to allow fans to enjoy their horses and their races from their own room.

The platform is still in beta, with its developers brainstorming what new features they can add to the game, while seeking approval from regulators to allow real-world in-game betting, and finalizing how users and investors can make a living within Zed Run.
