Russia bets on cross-border payments in cryptocurrencies

📍‌The Russian government is drawing up a plan to use cryptocurrencies for cross-border payments. Russia wants to test the potential of cryptocurrencies in international payments, Russian Central Bank Chairwoman Elvira Nabiullina said. To this end, the bank is developing regulations that will allow it to test crypto assets in the settlement of external trade agreements on an experimental basis.

Although the Central Bank of Russia does not rule out the possibility of banning cryptocurrencies within the country, the entity also recognizes that there is great potential in these digital assets, which operate within global systems, to overcome the economic blockade imposed by other governments such as that of the United States against the country.

In addition to testing cryptocurrencies in international payments, the Russian Federation is also working on creating special organizations and zones for cryptocurrency mining, an activity that has grown significantly in 2023, placing Russia as the second country with the greatest energy capacity for bitcoin mining.

📍‌The privacy feature for Bitcoin transactions, CoinJoin, is available on Trezor hardware wallets. Czech Republic-based cryptocurrency cold wallet maker SatoshiLabs has integrated Bitcoin's privacy feature CoinJoin into its Trezor Model T.

CoinJoin is a protocol that allows users to send bitcoins with a high level of privacy by mixing the inputs of multiple BTC transactions in order to obfuscate their origin and thus prevent them from being traced.

On Wednesday, Trezor's makers announced a collaboration with Wasabi Wallet to integrate the new feature. CoinJoin is currently available on Trezor's Model T wallet, while its arrival on the Trezor Model One, the manufacturer's first hardware wallet, is planned for the coming weeks.

Enabling CoinJoin on Trezor is optional and can be triggered when making a Bitcoin transfer from the wallet, explained Josef Tetek, Bitcoin analyst at Trezor.

With this integration, SatoshiLabs notes that it has become the first hardware wallet manufacturer to make it easier for its users to use this crypto mixer.
