Binance executive Vishal Sacheendran shares his perspectives on Europe's cryptoasset law, MiCA.
In a recent interview, Vishal Sacheendran, head of MENA and Europe region at Binance, spoke about the impact Europe's new regulatory framework will have on cryptocurrencies.
MiCA, acronym for Markets in Crypto-Assets, is the regulation approved by the European Union to oversee the development and innovation of the crypto industry in the region. This regulation was approved in a final vote that took place last April. Likewise, the president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, signed the law alongside Sweden's rural affairs minister Peter Kullgren earlier this month. Two weeks later, MiCA was published in the official journal of the European Union.
Being a fact, the European regulation for cryptocurrencies has aroused great interest in the crypto community, since with this law the region seeks harmonize the regulations governing cryptoassets in its 27 member countries, as well as being at the forefront of cryptoregulation, to establish clear rules that allow the growth and innovation of the crypto industry in the region.
Regarding MiCA, Sacheendran commented that it is a friendly regulation that brings clarity and uniformity to the crypto ecosystem in Europe. He also said that MiCA treats cryptocurrencies as financial services and that establishes standards for companies that participate in the crypto industry based on their size and the type of service they offer to their clients. In this way, financial service providers with cryptoassets must meet specific requirements depending on their type and the capital they manage.
On the other hand, Sacheendran commented that, although MiCA is not the first regulatory framework created for cryptocurrencies, it is one that establishes a “comprehensive set of regulations” that will allow responsible innovation. Circle's head of strategy and policy in Europe, Patrick Hansen, referred to MiCA as the most comprehensive regulatory framework ever created for the crypto industry.
The regulations established by MiCA will allow cryptoasset investors and consumers to more securely and transparently access digital assets. As this medium has reported, legislators consider that the implosion of FTX last November has made clear the need to establish clear regulation that guarantees the safety and protection of cryptocurrency investors and their funds.
In relation to the technological attractiveness of Europe, Sacheendran commented that MiCA could raise the attractiveness of the continent as a benchmark for innovation and attract new companies, capital and talent. MiCA could also serve as a model for other jurisdictions that build their own regulatory frameworks for the cryptocurrency industry, the Binance executive indicated.
