According to the statement shared by Tor, this collaboration not only promises to optimize the operations of both organizations, but also seeks to offer better tools to Internet users around the world, especially those facing authoritarian and repressive environments.

Tor and Tails: United for online security

Tor Project Executive Director Isabela Fernandes stressed that the combined efforts of Tor and Tails will help counter the growing threat of mass surveillance and online censorship.

The Tor Project, which is known for its browser that anonymizes online activity, and Tails, which is designed to protect users' privacy, have teamed up to Offer comprehensive security and privacy solutions to activists, journalists and ordinary citizens who are looking to stay protected in the digital world. Fernandes also stressed that by joining these two organizations, they are also ensuring the sustainable development and advancement of these two tools, which are vital for security and privacy on the Internet.

“Working together enables faster and more efficient collaboration, allowing for rapid integration of new features from one tool to another. This collaboration strengthens our mission and accelerates our ability to respond to evolving threats.”, Fernandes said.

On the other hand, Intrigeri, leader of the Tails team, highlighted that integrating with the Tor Project feels like “coming home.”

The decision to merge came after Tails identified the need for a more robust organizational structure to handle its operations. Rather than continuing as an independent entity, Tails opted to integrate with the Tor Project, believing that this merger will allow the Tails team to focus on its core mission of improving and maintaining Tails OS while benefiting from Tor’s established infrastructure, Intrigeri said.

Tails will help Tor expand its training efforts

According to release, one of the highlights of the merger between the Tor Project and Tails is the opportunity to expand the organization’s training and outreach efforts. Until now, Tor’s educational programs have focused primarily on its privacy-friendly web browser, but with the addition of Tails, new possibilities will open up to address a broader range of privacy needs in the digital world.

The merger of these organizations will also allow both projects to reach a broader audience. Until now, many users who are already familiar with Tor may not be aware of the capabilities that Tails OS offers. Therefore, by integrating Tails under the Tor umbrella, this essential tool can be introduced to more individuals and groups who require anonymity and security in their online activities.

A renewed commitment to Internet privacy

The union of Tor Project and Tails represents a renewed commitment to defending privacy on the Internet. With digital surveillance and censorship on the rise around the world, the need for robust tools to protect identity and personal information has never been more urgent. Because of this, this important collaboration not only strengthens the ability of both organizations to deliver effective privacy solutions, but also underscores the importance of cooperation in the fight for digital rights.

In short, the merger between Tor Project and Tails marks a milestone in the defense of privacy and freedom on the Internet.

By joining forces, both organizations are better equipped to meet the challenges of surveillance and censorship, providing users with more effective tools to protect their identity and information online.
