Shanghai is focusing on blockchain technology to boost the development of an urban digital infrastructure system.
To this end, the city has presented a Strategic plan, which is designed for the period 2023-2025 and will allow it to integrate new technologies into the real economy, public services and society in general.
Shanghai's aim through this new plan is to create an integrated platform for the efficient, transparent and secure management of the city's data and public services, as well as to foster innovation and ensure cooperation between the different players in the digital ecosystem.
Shanghai to build urban blockchain network
Through its web portal, the Shanghai government announced that it will build an interoperable urban blockchain network that connects government entities, businesses and citizens in one place.
The Shanghai blockchain network will also foster the integration and promotion of blockchain-based applications in key sectors such as health, education, transportation, energy and the environment, all in order to serve the strategic goals formulated in Shanghai’s 14th Five-Year Plan for Promoting Urban Digital Transformation and the 14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of the City’s Digital Economy.
Shanghai will become an international digital capital with global influence, the city government said.
In addition to promoting the use and adoption of blockchain, the city government also noted that the creation of an urban digital infrastructure will encourage the regulation and supervision of new technologies to ensure quality, security and compliance in blockchain-based solutions and to further stimulate research, development and training in this field.
China leads the innovation of blockchain technology
China is preparing several cities in the country to adopt and implement emerging technologies such as blockchain.
According to a report by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Chinese government has selected more than two dozen cities to become innovation and development centers for blockchain and other emerging technologies.
Through blockchain, China seeks to boost the digital transformation of the economy and society, as well as improve competitiveness and security in industries that are strategic for its development. The nation also seeks to foster the creation of smart cities where industrial development, innovation and ecological cultivation are comprehensively promoted, as well as research that supports the potential and opportunities of new technologies for sustainable development, data protection and international cooperation.
But China is not only using blockchain technology to accelerate development at a national level, but is seeking to position itself as a global leader in this technology to create new standards that provide clarity and allow it to comprehensively promote the digital transformation of other cities in the world, the Shanghai government said.
Currently, cities such as Beijing, the Chinese capital, Shanghai and Hangzhou, among others, have a favorable ecosystem for the development and growth of these innovations.
The metaverse in China
Another emerging technology that China is leading is the metaverse, with the launch of a strategic plan focused on this innovation in the city of Zhejiang at the end of December. Also, the city of Zhengzhou announced a series of proposals with which it seeks to support companies related to the Metaverse within the region.
All these initiatives demonstrate China's commitment and vision to promote emerging technologies as a new frontier of technological, economic and social innovation.
