Non-Fungible Agents (NFA): The new intelligent agents that will work for you in the BNB Chain

BAP-578 establishes the Non-Fungible Agent (NFA) standard in BNB Chain, enabling assets with autonomous AI, their own identity, and learning.

The BNB Chain network has formally submitted proposal BAP-578, a design document that introduces the standard for Non-Fungible Agents (NFA).

This is a technical initiative that seeks to expand the capabilities of the ERC-721 protocol to transform static digital assets into intelligent and autonomous entities capable of operating directly on the blockchain.

Unlike conventional tokens, NFAs integrate execution logic, their own wallet, and the optional ability to learn from their interactions. The standard aims to resolve the current fragmentation in the development of decentralized artificial intelligence applications by providing a common architecture that ensures interoperability between different protocols.

With the implementation of BAP-578, digital entities will cease to be mere objects of ownership and will become active agents with the ability to make decisions and execute financial transactions on the blockchain, without the need for constant human intervention.

BAP-578: A standard for the next generation of intelligent agents on blockchain

The developers of the BNB Chain have reported that the new BAP-578 standard is shaping up to be a key upgrade within the decentralized intelligence ecosystem. In a post shared on X, they explained that this proposal introduces a two-way architecture that aims to balance speed, efficiency, and learning capabilities in blockchain-based digital agents.

The first level, called JSON Light MemoryIt is designed to offer quick and easy integration. Its structure adapts to applications that require immediate compatibility with existing non-fungible tokens, facilitating the creation of agents with basic functions and agile deployment within the network.

The second approach presents a more advanced perspective based on Merkle treesThe goal is to enable agents to evolve continuously. Through this system, developers can design entities capable of processing interaction data, generating derived knowledge, and verifiably updating their own state, thereby strengthening trust in automated processes.

El standard It also stands out for its hybrid storage strategy. Essential information, such as identity, permissions, and the 32-byte Merkle root, remains secured directly on the blockchain. In contrast, more extensive data, including memory logs and behavioral patterns, is stored off-network. This mechanism not only reduces gas consumption but also ensures the traceability of learning through cryptographic Merkle proofs, maintaining the integrity of each update without sacrificing scalability or efficiency.

Overall, BAP-578 represents a solid step towards the creation of intelligent agents with auditable and expandable capabilities within the blockchain environment, marking a clear direction towards more autonomous and sustainable systems.

Greater interoperability and security in the AI agent economy

In the publication, the developers behind this proposal also highlighted that one of the pillars of BAP-578 is the creation of standardized interfaces that allow agents to interact with multiple decentralized applications (dApps) in a predictable manner.

Currently, the lack of common standards forces each project to develop custom infrastructures, limiting communication between different ecosystems. However, the new standard defines universal methods for action execution, state management, and logic updates. This will make it easier for an agent built for a decentralized finance (DeFi) platform to also operate in governance environments or content applications without requiring extensive technical adjustments.

The new standard also introduces a comprehensive security framework Designed to safeguard both user data and digital assets managed by artificial intelligence, this framework includes emergency shutdown mechanisms capable of halting operations in the event of any anomalous behavior, and a permissions system that regulates access to information stored in vaults, granting or revoking read and write rights on a programmed basis.

Furthermore, according to the developers, they also focus on gas consumption limits which seek to avoid cost overruns and protect network stability, with a maximum of three million units for delegated calls and five hundred thousand for learning update tasks.

As part of its design, the BAP-578 also includes specialized templates for various use cases:

  • DeFiAgentOptimized for trading strategies and automated financial operations.
  • GameAgent: Designed for interaction in virtual worlds and game mechanics.
  • DAOAgentFocused on active participation in governance and voting processes.
  • CreatorAgentFocused on content generation and digital rights management.
  • StrategicAgentDeveloped for the analysis of complex data and strategic decision-making.

The new frontier: Artificial intelligence with its own identity

In short, the introduction of BAP-578 marks a decisive step toward formalizing autonomous digital agents within the blockchain ecosystem. With this deployment, the developers of the BNB Chain aim to introduce a unified framework that regulates every stage of an AI agent's lifecycle, from its creation and initial resource allocation to its final evolution or operational decommissioning.

If approved, BAP-578 could lay the foundation for a more structured and reliable ecosystem for interaction between humans, artificial intelligences, and decentralized systems, outlining a scenario where digital identity becomes an essential component of the new technological order.
