Nike's RTFKT launches Cryptokicks iRL, the first Web3 sneaker

RTFKT has launched the first smart sneakers to merge the real and virtual worlds.

Digital collectibles and virtual fashion company RTFKT, acquired by multinational footwear and sports goods company Nike last year, has launched its First smart sneakers called Cryptokicks iRLThese are the first native Web3 sneakers that combine a series of technologies and innovations to bring users new experiences.

On its website, RTFKT highlighted that the Cryptokicks iRL feature the latest technology to combine Nike's decades of innovation with RTFKT's vision of merging the real world with the virtual world.

Cryptokicks iRL, the footwear of the future according to RTFKT

Nike and RTFKT’s first smart shoe, Cryptokicks iRL, is equipped with several smart features, including laces that automatically tighten at the push of a button, customizable lights, and a motion management and step counting system.

Additionally, these Web3-designed smart sneakers can connect with apps and include a wireless charging system via the RTFKT Powerdeck. Also, the Cryptokicks iRL are designed to allow communication and data exchange between devices thanks to RTFKT's WM NFC chip, which allows NFC-NFT pairing and authentication.

As if that weren’t enough, the Cryptokicks iRL sneakers will be compatible with the Internet of Adaptive Apparel & Footwear (IoAAF). On his Twitter account, Johnnyskicks CEO John Trottier highlighted that the patent for the ioAAF technology covers smart footwear and logic for navigation assistance using automated textile audio or visual feedback.

19.000 units will be available

Cryptokicks iRL will be available in four colors and will have a limited distribution of 19.000 units. On the other hand, these smart shoes will only be available to users in the United States. The company reported that the geographical limitation is due to the regulation of the technology used for their design and creation.

These smart sneakers will be offered as digital collectibles in NFT format that will allow their holders to claim their physical counterparts. Users interested in purchasing these smart sneakers can register on the RTFKT website for private and public sales. According to the company, only one purchase will be allowed per RTFKT account and wallet address, in order to ensure a fairer distribution.

The current cost of Cryptokicks iRL ranges from 0,44 ethers to 1,02 ethers, roughly $550 to $1.280 at the time of writing.

Technology and NFTs are present in Nike's DNA

Nike has been exploring new technologies, such as NFTs and their many use cases, for some time now. In fact, the acquisition of the company RTFKT a year ago was part of Nike’s strategy to accelerate its growth and digital transformation.

Nike President and CEO John Donahoe said last year that Nike wants to secure its digital future and that RTFKT was the right fit to help boost the digital footprint and expand the capabilities of its sports brand.

So far, Nike has about five NFT collections that are available on the Opensea marketplace. These digital collectibles sell for up to 1,32 ether, actually.
