📍Osvaldo Gimenez has revealed MercadoLibre's plans to expand trading in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies in Latin America. During an interview with El País, Osvaldo Gimenez revealed that MercadoLibre plans to advance its cryptocurrency adoption strategy, to allow millions of users in Latin America the possibility of buying, selling and holding cryptocurrencies through their accounts on the e-commerce platform.
MercadoLibre's decision is driven primarily by people's need to access the financial system. Gimenez commented that almost half of the population in Latin America does not have access to a bank account. However, the need for banking in the Latin population can be met through Bitcoin and crypto assets.
The director of Mercado Pago also spoke about the success the company had with its cryptocurrency services in Brazil. As Bit2Me News had reported, in November 2021, MercadoLibre enabled its new services in cryptoassets in the Latin country, allowing its Brazilian customers the possibility of making and receiving payments with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, through their digital wallets in MercadoPago.
