Brazil will issue a new digital identity for its citizens

Brazil is adopting blockchain technology to issue a new digital identity document for its more than 200 million citizens.

The Brazilian government has partnered with information technology company Serpro to integrate blockchain into all issuing bodies nationwide starting this week. Together with the company, Brazil will launch the b-Cadastros blockchain platform and begin issuing a digital version of the National Identity Document that will be backed by blockchain.

Serpro offers a private blockchain solution tailored to the needs of the Brazilian government that will allow it to modernize and adapt its entities to the new technological era.

Alexandre Amorim, President of Serpro, said that the new digital identity that Brazil will issue to its citizens will work with a fraud-proof QR code and that this digital identity document will serve to offer a more intuitive and complete user experience.

Amorim also said that citizens' personal data will be stored and managed on the private blockchain with a high level of security and will be completely immutable. However, this data will be accessible to all issuing entities of the Brazilian government.

The first cities to implement the new digital identity on blockchain will be Rio de Janeiro, the second most populous city in the country; Goiás, which is among the 10 largest economies in the country and Paraná, considered the national capital of softball. The rest of Brazilian cities and states will join this initiative of the national government before November 6, Serpro indicated in a statement. release.

Blockchain: Fraud protection and prevention

One of the reasons why the Brazilian government is integrating blockchain technology into all issuing bodies nationwide is to ensure the protection of citizens’ data and to mitigate the risk of fraud.

As we know, blockchain technology has a number of features and advantages that increase security and trust, improve traceability and transparency, and guarantee the immutability and inviolability of records. Therefore, in the case of personal data, this technology can ensure complete, transparent, and reliable registration, storage, management, and handling.

In this regard, Amorim also highlighted the speed and automation offered by blockchain for the issuance of new digital identities, which will undoubtedly provide ease and convenience for both citizens and employees of the issuing entities.

“The use of the b-Cadastros blockchain platform is a great differential for the security and reliability of the National Identity Document project”, Amorim said.

The Secretary for Digital Government of the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services, Rogério Mascarenhas, added that blockchain technology in the issuance of national identity documents facilitates access to services and unifies and regularizes administrative records, in addition, it provides new functionalities that benefit citizens.

In February of last year, Brazil approved Decree No. 10.977, which establishes that, as of November 6 of this year, all issuing agencies in the country are required to adopt the new standards for the issuance of the blockchain-based national identity document.

Buenos Aires also implements digital identity

In the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the local government also announced the adoption of blockchain technology to begin issuing digital identity services owned by citizens.

The Argentine city, which currently has more than 15 million people, is using zkSync Era's blockchain solution, which implements zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs to significantly scale the Ethereum network.

According to reported The expansion of the Worldcoin project has led governments to prioritize the search for solutions that allow privacy and transparency in personal data collection and digital identity programs. Starting this month, citizens of Buenos Aires will be able to use the QuarkID digital wallet to access birth and marriage certificates, as well as other documents to come, such as proof of income and academic verification.
