A Spanish citizen filed a patent application on the original Bitcoin logo before the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office. The Office has recently approved the submitted application.
The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office approved a request made by the citizen and lawyer Ignacio Rubio Menéndez, who is a partner and founder of the legal services firm Boots&Rubio Lawyers. This citizen filed the patent application on the original Bitcoin logo in early December 2019 under the name Eduardo Pérez Montero, resident in the province of Asturias, Spain. The concession issued this June 18 by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office grants the rights to the original Bitcoin logo to Rubio.
On the other hand, Rubio applied for the patent through a special power of attorney that authorizes and allows him to sign documents and carry out procedures and requests in the name of Pérez as his client.
The Bit2Me News team contacted Rubio to learn first-hand the reasons that drive him to take this action. Additionally, Rubio tells us what plans he has regarding the Bitcoin brand? And how does he plan to protect the brand from influential people in the crypto ecosystem who try to harm it? Let's see.

Ignacio Rubio responds to us about the Bitcoin brand patent
First of all, Rubio affirms that it is not, nor is it considered Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of Bitcoin. However, he patented the original logo that represents this system and cryptocurrency for more than 10 years. All this as a way to protect citizens who use said brand.
Rubio declared that he is now the legal owner of the Bitcoin logo in Spain, which will allow him to protect Bitcoin within Spanish territory from those who want to misuse this logo. He also points out that he will be able to sue and defend Bitcoin through his legal firm Botas & Rubio Abogados against cases in which attempts are made to use the logo in events that harm the cryptocurrency and citizens in general.
“Botas&Rubio will defend its clients from any illegitimate attack that occurs against them. This specific person is considered in the world as a “fake Satoshi”, and beyond what is legally valid evidence, such as the first bitcoin block, we see no legal impediment to the exploitation of the brand.”
The latter in reference to Craig Wright, who declared himself on several occasions as the “real” Satoshi Nakamoto. All this despite the fact that in more than 5 years he has not been able to provide concrete evidence to demonstrate the veracity of these statements.
On the other hand, we asked Rubio if there were plans to create a foundation or organization in Spain aimed at protecting Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies that were created in the same way as Bitcoin, such as Monero that does not have a known figure or creator. In response to this, Rubio points out that at the moment he cannot affirm any future plans for his client. In fact, he confirms that his client “wishes to remain anonymous.”
Bitcoin now becomes a trademark logo
It should be noted that the request made by this citizen specifies that the Bitcoin logo is composed of the capital “B” with 2 upper appendages and 2 lower appendages enclosed within an orange circle and followed by the word “bitcoin” in italics. with lowercase “b” in black. This is the trademark patented by Rubio.
To date, Rubio points out that he has been trading in the cryptocurrency for some time and that he owns an office for the purchase and sale of bitcoins. Therefore, through the registration of the brand, he will be the public responsible for Bitcoin in Spain. With this he seeks to provide security to new users who want to enter this system.
Likewise, Rubio clarified that the patent registered by him is on the logo of the cryptocurrency itself and not the system or protocol that Bitcoin represents. He also highlighted that in the whitepaper of Bitcoin, the word written with a lowercase “b” represents the cryptocurrency, while Bitcoin with a capital “B” refers to the system.
Likewise, it stated that to date it has not received any complaints, allegations or formal communications regarding the patent made.
“Knowing the trade, it is too early to receive serious complaints, another thing would be an email, but at the moment we have no news in that regard.”
